  1. Hi

I don't know too much about air rifles but was speaking to someone about applying for my FAC, he suggested getting a FAC air rifle but if I did to buty one that was purposely built as FAC and not one that has been altered to FAC. What's eveyones opinion. If this is right how do you know whether a gun has been altered or factory built at FAC rating?

  2. I have been toying with the idea of living on a canal boat, but wondered where that would leave me with regards to housing my shot guns and also the address on my licence as I was planning to move about?

    Any advice on the matter?

  3. Wow the amount of interest amazes me, especially the amoun that seems to come from people that pleasure themselves from other peoples misfortunes, although hardly surprises me from the amount of text messages being sent within hours of japans disaster.

It was a shooting accident 100% my fault, neverless an accident is an accident. No one ever goes out with thr intenion of not returning in the same state of health

I will retract the quote loss of limb and replace it with loss of finger, as the amount quoted earlier actually stipulates loss of finger in basc policy.

The reason for sharing my life experience with you all is that it would not have mattered if I had blown my leg off your personnel cover is worthless, so if you have family commitments of anything else that you cant afford to have any unforeseen accidents then read p.32 and see what price the policy puts on your bits and pieces. Don't rely on this policy for your own accident. That's all.

My mates a lorry driver and he lost a 1/4 inch off the end of his index finger at work, the company admitted liability, and after a bit of haggling the insurers paid him out £62,000 and he kept his job.

  4. No compensation will make it any better, it is the fact that basc advertise for a loss of limb as 7500 then the small print comes into play.I thought they would be providing their members with a decent Policy, at least one that matches the big advert on their web page.

Would a £20,000 pay out have helped you refit your home and vehicle in order to help you cope with the loss of this limb, and the hardship it will now cause in your daily life?

  5. I recently had an accident and had my Forefinger amputated. it is to my dIstress to find out that our personnel injury provided by basc only puts a value of 600 pounds on a loss of a limb. Everyone should read page 32 of their policy and see the percentages given for different injuries.

Is there anything I can do to appeal this insult.

Or any action I can take, as thought it is basc policy to have its members best interests as their prioity

  6. He voluntarily handed his licence in, which he will apply for again in the near future, and shouldn't have any problem in getting it back, but until then he has the shooting rights and I am a member of his syndicate, it was fine for him to take myself out without a licence, but is it ok the other way round, I take him out on the land that he has the rights too?

And thanks for the feedback, but it seems to be a grey area, where it would depend on how reasonable your fire arms officer is. He is mentally stable and not a threat to himself or others, just suffered from depression for a small period due to some personal problems and done the sensible and responsible action.

Debate:- Say he lost his licence or voluntarily gave it up

the op would have to clarify the above before it could be debated.

Why has he lost it/give it up.

Those bouncers are too much, my attention span is weakening

the idea that someone can't take their children shooting and teach them to shoot webber is absolute bulls testicles. Are you in possesion of a firearm without a license if the SGC holder is next to you I would say not. If not its implications the length and breadth of the country on driven days when people often have a friend / wife / girlfriend carry their gun or hold it while they pick up. You can't let people wander off with a gun but under direct supervision and with you holding shooting rights it would be an immense waste of public money to try for a prosecution that would with the Home office guidance document be doomed to failure. as for insurance that only becomes an issue if there is an accident and as we all know you are far better off making sure an accident doesn't happen. There is a simple reason this hasn't been in court and thats because its unenforceable without a definition of occupier being found in law. With home office guidance being that it includes people with shooting rights then its hardly likely to go against that
  8. So what's this woodburner club about? I would like to join.

I have a three storey town house, therefore the flue is very long 11m, this makes a huge difference on the rate at which the burner burns. I put a butterfly valve in is this what you mean by dampner? I open this when I put more wood on otherwise smoke spills in to the room. If I wasn't to close this valve the wood would be gone in a fraction of the time.

I was thinking about a back boiler, can you buy them and add them on as an after thought, or would you have to buy a new burner?

I have a combie boiler, if i were to get a back boiler or replace the burner, could I simply cut into the radiator line, and put a separate supply onto the water pump? Are there any solenoids or valves that automatically close in the combie or would putting the supply onto the water pump just circulate through the combie?

I have a cottager stove, rough and ready, I love it. My only grudge is that I bought double door with the intention of opening the doors, this defeats the object of having a burner and now I have the strip where the doors close restricting some of the view into the burner, wished I had bought a single door as you get a bigger panel of glass.

I would never be able to get mine to relight in the morning though, 4 hours and it is out what ever wood I burn. I get it quickly to temperature, then I close everything, maybe I need to change the rope around the doors, any ideas?

Really like the way the metal box looks. The walls round mine aren't quite plumb so it is difficult to get the leading edge to look anything. I might run metal down them to tidy it up.

By the look of the size of the fire I suspect you don't have to have a wacking great hole in the wall. As a side note my dog loves the vent he constently sniffs the air, like one would sample a fine wine.

As this thread continues I find I am more and more getting to the sad postion of wodburner apprichation. Want to join the club, we have badges?

  9. Thanks for the replies, and your help.

I did read a test in one of the mags some years back when gun makers started bringing out the 3.5" chamber and it was suggested that using short 2.5" cartridges in them could make the patterns a little less tidy because of the jump to the forcing cones. It was nothing major, but you wouldn't get quite the same results as if the same cartridge was fired through a 2.75" gun.

I'd imagine it's the same to some extent for the 3" chambers, but to even less of a degree. I really wouldn't worry about it because many of us use that combination with no problems at all, even the top clay shots to whom the slightest difference matters. I certainly wouldn't be buying 3" cartridges for clay shooting as the rattling teeth they would give you would be more of a problem than the pattern of the shot! :good:

As Wymberley said. Always check the cartridge is suitable for your gun. It doesn't matter if you use smaller but put a 3" in a 2.75" gun and there's a chance you could burst it with very expensive and painful results.

  10. Last year I was out walking and met a gent shooting, got chatting and this was the start to my new sport. I didn't have a licence or gun, but was able to go out with him and use one of his spares. I am told that this situation was acceptable because he has the shooting rights to the land that was shot.

Debate:- Say he lost his licence or voluntarily gave it up would I be able to put his guns on my licence and supervise him shooting on the land that he has the shooting rights on, or would I have to be the land owner, or have the shooting rights before I could take him out?

  11. My parents was so hot it was nearly unbearable, then I installed one and the results were not very satisfactory.

Then I found my opening everything up when first lighting it and getting a good bed of ambers, then closing it down made a huge difference. It's like a bbq you need a good bed of ambers which burns hotter. Now I find it hard to stay awake it's getting too hot.

  12. So Chrispti in your opinion, is it the Maxus or the xtrema 2? Is the xtrema 2 much heavier than the Maxus? Is the extra weight of the xtrema better to reduce muzzle flip? Purely for geese what would the choice be?

All the autos I have used have not had problems jamming. SX3, Xtrema2, M2, maxus.

All but the Xtrema2, would not consistently/reliably cycle carts under 70mm, It does state in their manuals though, to use a minimum cart length of 70mm :good:

The Xtrema2 cycled anything I fed it and not once jammed on me.

As I posted earlier, I have put about 1000 carts through the Maxus now, and have yet to clean it  but it has not jammed up once :hmm:

  13. last season was my first. I was using a friends semi.

On the 4th Jan I went out and bought my O/U, that Saturday I went out for the afternoon flight on the marshes, with not a lot of action, dusk came and then the moon light.

To my disbelief two mallards dropped in and there was my first right and left. Therefore I christened my new gun with my first right and left under the moon light, if that isn't romance I don't know what is. It will stay with me for life, and luckily I was with my friend that I had been shooting the entire season and I think he was more happy for me than I was.

Nope, just me and the chickens. :hmm: You know i dont have any friends.:good::hmm:
  14. All the above articles mention clays and pigeon shooting, what about 3 1/2 cartridges for geese, has any one any experience in this field, would it compare better than the xtrema 2 for wildfowling?

My shooting pal has one and it seems to be very good. He does prefer 70mm cartridges though.
  15. Exactly the point, where is the RSPCA when they are needed, race or religion and you have an open book to do what you want, unless you are ENGLISH then you get beaten with a great big .... stick

Its not true, there are videos of this type of slaughter where animals die very quickly, in the real world it doesn't happen, they bleat, cough, choke, convulse then die.

It cruel and unneccesary and in my opinion (which means nothing to the law makers) is unlawful, it illegal to be cruel to an animal, man gets done for drowning a pest, yet followers of Islam can go round slashing animals throats..it bloody infuriates me.

Religion should never, ever be an excuse to breaking the law.

  16. Trade the missus in and keep the dog

I often wonder how many dogs i would have if i had the space, Hopefuly building a kennel for a couple more soon. I think if you have the space, have the time and can afford the outrages vet costs then then why not, Sounds like its your hobby/lifestyle so go for it!

Tell your mrs you need it as by the time its ready for working one of the older dogs will probably be retired!

Asking a bunch of guys if having one more of something is too much......Have you seen how many guns some of these guys have.........

  17. I went sea fishing at the week end, I slid a big hook through a Lug worm then chucked in to the sea to drown, does this make me cruel, I guess it does, ban all fishing

Good job done by the RSPCA, he stuck his head above the parapet so should not be surprised by the outcome. Drowning any animal is not on, if you do not have the means to dispatch them humanely then you should not be trapping them in the first place.
