  1. +1 for Colin aka Solway stalker, I've done 4 visits and had 5 deer and 2 suckling boar, my last visit was @ 6 weeks ago I got 2 roe in the morning including a 6 pointer and the 2 boar in the evening / night, that was a great experience. He has loads of land to go at and will try his very best to get you on something. I will go up again on the does later in the year when my venison runs low.

Another vote for Colin, he's spot on. Put me at ease for my first stalk and great country too!

  2. Over the last couple of years most the rabbits in my area have been wiped out by RVHD (Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease) and now that RVHD2 has spread to this country I suspect any immunity building up in the local population will give no protection to this new strain.

This! Our family farms used to be overrun, you literally couldn't feed the .22lr fast enough. Mixy came and had a marked effect but over the last couple of years we have had a complete disappearance of rabbits.

We see a few juveniles but that's it, we now have hare in ground previously unseen and no rabbits to speak of.

I think the population was dealt a significant blow with the serious winter and following floods of 2013 plus the new disease.

I have gone from buying Lr and HMR ammo monthly to almost twice a year!!

  3. A lot of it depends on your feeding structure and farm methods. We bale rounds typically for silage, hay and straw as our feeders are round and they can be easily 'rolled' out for bedding up.

We also bake some straw as 'hestons' that go straight to a pig farmer as his system is set up for them. Some pig and cattle systems are set up for larger hestons that are chopped up and distributed by a particular type of machine.

Intereating topic. Was wondering myself. The farmer baled half the field near us with square bales and removed them straight away, then baled the other half in circular bales and just left them in the field.

The round bales generally stand the weather ok due to the way the get baled. Hestons are much more 'open' and as such need to be led before much damage can be done by the rain

  4. I built a platform of a sleeper about waist high off two piers, fixed timber uprights at staggered centres and then drop the cord wood into it, secure in place with a ratchet strap.

Tried the saw horse and it's a pain in the ****, logs move, you nick the chain etc

  5. Tom...I have owned and cried over an X5, 3 litre diesel..

My honest opinion is avoid at all costs, they drive beautifully and are so comfortable however the thing nearly bankrupted me...

Average low 20's mpg even after being remapped, approx 200 quid a corner for tyres which they are very prone to scrub due to being 'pushed' around corners.

**** electric connectors that corrode and throw faults like failing indicators, failing air suspension bags...

The final straw happened coming home from Glencoe when the torque converter **** itself back through the gearbox..2k Bill...apparently the torque converter was never man enough to cope with the 3.0 litre block..

The older X5 has a lot to blame on the USA SUV market imho, did I forget to mention brake calipers that are prone to Siezing..

My regular mechanic runs his own BMW race team and even he was staggered by how **** the X5 was, give me back my 325 m sport!

PM me for more tales of woe lol...

  6. As my earlier post I use Smidge in the highlands and at home, good for midges and clegs.

If you're static in a hide or walling then try using a Thermacell, our local grouse keeper swears by it!

  7. Have to say there are some very well informed, factual and rational posts on this subject so far. It's a pleasure to read a decent discussion, playing devils advocate I would suggest we need as a community to take the initiative away from Avery etc.

In an ideal world one of the more wealthy moor owners (eg Gunnerside estate) should actively set up a HH programme (blow the cost) and take the wind out of the antis sails..???

  8. Have to agree with Scotslad and Jdog, our farm is on a shooting estate, we border the grouse moor and have sheep gates on it.

We have more wildlife, bird species like lapwings, curlews, plovers, owls, BOP, song birds etc than you can shake a stick at.

Grouse shooting isn't perfect and at times is its own worst enemy (indeed a stupid idiot on this very estate was prosecuted for a pole trap and sacked on the spot)...BUT...for me the positives far outweighs the negatives.

  9. Clegs / horseflys etc are in abundance this year in our neck of the woods, wet and mild winters are to blame.

I blather myself in 'Smidge' when climbing in the highlands and it works for midges, it is also bloody marvellous for clegs back home in the Dales, I can be walling all day covered in Smidge and not get tagged once, leave uncovered skin available in July and it's guaranteed I will get bitten.

  10. It's a sorry state of affairs when we don't get surprised by things like this, my sympathy Steve. We have close / immediate family losses and the thought of someone being so disrespectful really saddens me, almost a feeling beyond anger but one of total disappointment and sadness at what this worlds turning into.

  11. Owdo all..

So I've decided to part with some cash for a pair of binos, I've got some stalking booked in September with Solway Stalking and I have decided to sort myself out with some binos.

This will be my first stalk and something I'm looking to do more off but I have a limited budget of a couple of hundred quid for some binos.

Been looking at Minox BL 10x42 and also the Zeiss terra ED range.

From what I can understand the Minox only have Schott glass on the expensive circa 1k range of glasses?

Any thoughts advice would be greatfully received

  12. Quite right and why they got a stumbling gamekeeper is beyond me, they really should have had a farmer or the NFU or similar

Anyone one of the PW clan, country, shooting or farming fraternity would have made a better fist of it, sadly the NFU is about as much use as tits on a fish...

  13. aigle parcours 2 iso

Neoprene lined buckle tops for me, fantastic boot, long lasting and very comfortable

This! Worn them for picking up, farm work, wet, snow, lambing etc. Bomb proof and really comfortable.

  14. It's a love hate thing! I love the wife but hate her sheep lol.

Our Mule flock are fairly dim but built like battleships, our horned flock are rather crafty and quite happy to remind you they have horns...

They all have a death wish, had one come off the clippers trailer on Sunday morning and drop down dead!

My wife loves lamb more than any other meat. So much so that when I do a mole trapping job on a sheep farm I have to take my payment in meat, not money. :unhappy:

Look up Jamie Oliver's recipe for slow cooked (4hr) whole shoulder of lamb, has a mint, red wine vinegar and caper sauce with it....its sublime and so so easy to do.

  15. A few years ago now I had sharpening issues, honestly take Scotslads advice. I took his advice many moons ago and it stood me in good stead. I run a 28 inch bar and a 14 inch bar and have them sharp as crystal just by hand with not a great deal of graft. The stihl kits for angle and rakers are worth buying.
