  1. This is an original factory fitted laminate stock, which has been pillar bedded by Riflecraft, using aluminium pillars. Its in very good condition but has been used, so there are some very minor marks, but nothing serious. Came off a 77/17 HMR but will also fit the 77/22 WMR.

  2. Last year's figures, put down 500 pheasants shot 380 pheasant, put down 500 partridge shot 50 partridge, did not hold at all so build bigger pheasant pens and have abandon the partridge

We did exactly the same a few seasons ago, the only difference is you shot 10% of your partridges, we didn't quite get in to double figures.....

  3. Yes we use a bit of kibbled maize, I haven't got any pics, but it is very dusty. We normally use it through a spinner or hand feed it mixed with wheat later in the season. If there is any left at the end of the season I put it in the normal spring feeders, and it goes through fine. I have noticed it can go a bit lumpy if it gets damp, but as long as your feeders are water proof it should be ok.

Pheasants love it, but I have read that too much maize can make them fat, which doesn't help their flying ability.

  4. Realistically HMRC have thrown the threat out there in the hope the more commercial shoots comply. I'm yet to hear of one locally that does, most rely on cash from guns to pay beaters and cash is untraceable if you don't record who it goes to or where it came from. If you are filing full accounts then it may be different but otherwise they only show what you put into them.

None of this is aimed specifically at shoots, we are talking about standard tax rules that apply to all income from any type of work, income from beating has always been taxable. I have been on quite a few commercial shoots, and none of them have ever asked for cash to pay the beaters. The only cash usually required is a tip for the keeper.

Syndicate shoots often ask the guns for cash for the beaters, and I agree with what you say about traceability. The likelihood of a beater who beats on one shoot 8 times a season for £20 a time is unlikely to get caught out. There are other beaters that are out several times a week, who can earn a tidy sum over the course of a season. These people are much more likely to come to the attention of HMRC.

  5. My shoot offers either un-taxed payment which needs to be declared on a self-assessment, or alternatively they pay expenses at a set rate which isn't taxable, which is for mileage, use of dogs etc.

The untaxed payment is fine, there are special rules that allow shoots to pay beaters without deducting tax. As you say, the payment is taxable and needs to be declared.

Assuming you are a beater, you can't claim mileage for your journey from home to the shoot, but if you do any mileage at the shoot in your own vehicle, you can be paid 40p per mile tax free. You can't claim expenses for use of a dog either, so if you don't do any genuine mileage, the payment will still be taxable. Just calling a payment "expenses" doesn't make it tax free

The rules for picker up's are different as they can genuinely claim to be self employed. The payment from the shoot is still taxable, but they are able to offset more expenses against their income.

  6. Not sure of the inland revenue definition of an employee but if you "work" for only one shoot then I can see your point but if you are turning adhoc then isn't this more akin to self employment in which case surely the costs of travel, clothing, cleaning etc can be deducted against any income. Personally still think the raffle ticket idea sounds plausible.

HMRC's long standing view is that beaters are generally employees, due to the working relationship between the shoot/gamekeeper and the beater.

Re the raffle tickets, money from the tooth fairy isn't taxable, perhaps you could get her to deliver the "prizes"........

  7. go to just cartridges web and look at how to order I have already had my solicitor and the police what I must do end of story please don't divert the thread I am sure if I am breaking the law it would have been told after the meeting at renewal by the concerned authorities how come I person may collect for another and it is not the cert holder?? thanks George

If your ordering and delivery processes have been approved by the police, you should make more of it. Get a how to order page on your website etc. I think it would be a good selling point?

  8. hi chrisash I have done a deal with a pallet company where I can put up to 15000 on so I am offering to pay the freight to your door on a buy of 6000 which works out about £4.40 per 1000 transport per 1000 if you fill the pallet with the 15000 it works about£1.80 or so per thousand that's next day and on your door you cannot get better than that can you we r getting there slowly but we r growing at a good rate get a bit bigger and I will negotiate but the above prices r good enough for me thanks george

What have you done about the legal side of selling cartridges directly, but not face to face? I know it was a problem for Just Cartridges when they started and I believe it took a bit of sorting out. There is a thread on here about it:

Post #44 and onwards are the most relevant.

  9. if the guns have a whip round I understand its not taxable.

I've thought about this and if the keeper gives everyone a raffle ticket and then an envelope with a prize would this not circumvent the issue as its a prize draw. Everyone's a winner.

Is this how you get paid for your day jobs? If these idea's actually worked, everyone would be paid this way, tax free..............

If this thread was about employees in any other industry not declaring income and not paying tax, I'm sure the reply's would be very different.

  10. Yes, I use it. Over a period of time I think it will help prove the benefits of shooting, and will show the conservation efforts that shoots of all sizes and types put in. The more people that use it, the more accurate and useful the data will be.

  11. Completely agree ColinF. I was just saying that I personally would also prefer to walk up.

That's fine, but I would suggest that the reasons you prefer walked up grouse are completely different to the reasons of the RSPB spokesman?

  12. Just listened to radio norfolk interviewing the director of the RSPB on his opinion of the Aug 12th grouse.....his reply was......................................................

" i do not like the idea of standing in a butt, waiting for wild birds to be pushed together to fly thro the butts and be shot in front and going away".....if i were to shoot grouse i would much prefer to be out with a few mates and dogs , walking thro the hills and the heather hunting the grouse using skill and dogs"

A few years ago I had the privilege of doing exactly that. A mate of mine and I had a day walking up grouse, just us two with a guide each and their dogs. We walked for miles amongst beautiful scenery and had a few grouse to try and shoot. An amazing day and in MHO far better than sitting in a butt and very much cheaper. So regardless of any hidden agenda he may or may not have had, in my opinion he is very much correct.

But the reality is, without driven grouse shooting and the money it generates, there wouldn't be any walked up grouse shooting either. No one could afford to manage the moors in the way they are now on the back of the income from walked up days.

  13. Thanks for the advice. The last tenant did mention the keeper was going to let them push a big wood through thats not on the land, supposed to be a decent bloke so looking to work with him as against him. Will post out progress in time

Sounds like a very good, but unusual position to be in. You should get to know the keeper as soon as possible, you will need him much more than he needs you!

Good luck with it, I will look forward to reading your updates.
