I quite like the BBC.
I’m not blind to their faults, and I will concede that they have many.
However, on balance, they perform a useful service. Their coverage of news and current affairs at least attempts to be consistent and convey factual information. I’ve had cause to complain about their “take” on current events many times in the past, and I will undoubtedly have occasion to do so in the future, but in the grand scheme of things they provide a service which would be sorely missed if it were to cease.
A TV channel which consistently reports current affairs or world events in a manner which always conforms to a particular view of the world provides no useful function.

I'm guessing some politically correct dressing up hand wringing is going on with it being kept so secretive what has taken place, by and to whom getting on for two days after the event. Plain speaking factual English reporting has definitely left the UK.
I wonder how many woke advisers have been consulted before it gets dressed up to avoid offending someone.
That’s right, you’re guessing.
You have no new insight or hard facts, merely speculation and prejudice.
Let’s wait for some information and evidence.

Ireland joining the EU in 1973 was an experiment which sort of worked and became the template for a raft of other small, relatively backward states to join in the 90s. The EU poured eye watering amounts of cash into Ireland to propel the country into the 1st world. Apart from a few vanity projects like random stretches of dual carriage in the middle of nowhere, the money enabled Ireland to compress 100 years of economic development into 1 generation, but the financial cost was enormous.
IMO it's long overdue for Ireland to start pulling it's weight with their EU budget contributions.
Thank you for this penetrating and astute analysis.
The three countries which joined the European Union in the 90’s were Sweden, Finland and Austria. Backward you say?
That part of the island of Ireland which is currently part of the UK cannot even manage a dual carriageway between its two largest cities, Belfast and Derry, which are a mere seventy miles apart. Backward?

If you are a black person and are continually pulled over by the police although you are not involved in criminal activity, at what point are you entitled to become disgruntled or uncooperative? The third time, the fifth time or, perhaps, the eighth time?
Anyone who believes that the police do not engage in racial profiling is deluded.
Whilst you and your mate (Mr. Nobody) can avoid the attentions of the police by removing your baseball caps and keeping a clean number plate that’s not possible if what attracts their malicious attention is the fact that you are black.

I’m sorry, I completely missed that.
Mea culpa.

I’m intrigued that none of the many supporters of the Tory party who regularly post have raised the issue of Dominic Cummings.
Do people consider that his story is credible?
Were his actions in driving to his fathers home place justified?
Should the PM continue to support him or sack him?
What do you think?

Yeah, most likely Travellers, Romanians, Poles, EU Nationals...............
Jesus wept.

Snide comment!
Nothing snide about it.
The video clip shows clearly what the Tory party think of the NHS, especially the nurses. The cheering of the Tory back benches when the motion was defeated can be fairly characterised as both triumphalist and derisive. That’s how much they value NHS front line staff.
You may choose to laud a newly chastened Boris as the champion of the NHS but the record of both he and his party belie that.
Do not seek to tarnish me with the actions of those horrible people who would take satisfaction in the PM’s illness: they are beneath contempt. However, I am not prepared to permit him pose as the defender of the NHS when nothing could be further from the truth. He and his political allies have emasculated the NHS.

I'd love to know what your 'way of life' is then 😁
Are you a dole scrounger?
If you believe that only “dole scroungers” are horrified at the prospect of living in a society ordered as the Tories would have it, you are very sadly misguided.

I think that Labour and the hard left are just totally against my entire way of life.
That’s odd: I think of the Tory party in exactly the same way.

Yeah! All eleven of the most senior judges in the UK.

I truly fear for the future of honest debate and dialogue on this site when garbage and hyperbole like the above passes for “comment”.

At the risk of being called a pedant!
The term “toe rag” is erroneous.
In the linen industry the finished fabric is woven from the long fibres that are extracted from the stalks of the flax plant. The shortened or truncated fibres are of much poorer quality and were referred to in the mills as “tow”.
Traditionally these fibres were woven into poor quality cloth or rags; hence “tow rags”
The etymology of this expression appears to have been lost as even some dictionaries use the wrong spelling.

Yes, very satisfactory seeing a dishonest politician getting caught and punished appropriately.
Less pleasing to see the smug superiority and casual racism which the episode provoked in some people.
-
Racist chanting and targeted racial abuse is despicable and should not be tolerated.
To suggest that because the person abused is highly paid he should have to put up with it is idiotic, and speaks volumes about the people who suggest it.

The 1922 Committee will receive the necessary 48 letters expressing “no confidence” in the PM.
The motion to depose her will be put and will not command a majority.
Ms. May to continue as PM and be immune from internal Tory threat for one year.

You know whats the most funny about that spiel ?
You talk about Irish nationalists, and one mans attitude to the EU and Brexit, I presume you think the IRA and Sinn Fein 'liberated' Ireland front British hegemony ?
All good, thats fine if you want to think like that, you got autonomy...
Then you went and sold yourselves down the river to Brussels ! You now live under an EU hegemony.
Not a nation, but a state. The EU are using Ireland, using YOU , to 'win' these negotiations , you are an expendable gaming chip.
Your Taosiech is a weak, underling servant of Brussels, and any economic suffering inflicted on the UK will be reflected straight back onto Eire.
Which will suit the EUs aims perfectly, as they bail you out, leaving you owing them billions, a bit like Greece without the sun.Unfortunately Ireland is not yet liberated from British hegemony: part of it is.
You might note that he is not my “Taoiseach”. As my address indicates I reside in the northern part of the island; the part that remains under British jurisdiction, which, as you may be aware, voted against Brexit.
After Brexit the UK’s only land border with the EU will be in Ireland. No thought whatever has been given by British politicians to the devastation this will cause to the economy of Ireland, north and south. “It will be all right on the night” is as considered a response as one gets when pertinent questions are put to British politicians about the regulatory regime that will exist post Brexit.
If anybody is “expendable” in this mess it is the people of the north of Ireland whose wish’s and hopes for the future are being disregarded by the Tory government.

Frank Field belongs to the right wing of the Labour Party. This has been long been the case. His views are not representative of the Labour Party. It is long past time that he resigned from the Party. If the Party had any balls they would have grasped this nettle a long time ago.
His views on Brexit are generally atypical of mainstream Labour and his consistent support of the Tory party is reprehensible.
He does not give a dam about the multiple problems that Brexit will cause on the island of Ireland and his political position on Ireland has been regressive for many years.
Those posters who condemn JC for supporting Irish nationalists merely display their ignorance. Sinn Fein are a legal political party. Get over it! There is no agreed narrative about the war in Ireland. Many Irish nationalists support Sinn Fein and supported the IRA. There is every indication that Sinn Fei will continue to represent their political aspirations. Frank Field’s attitude to Ireland and to the EU is appalling. Let's have a bye election.

The day when it was possible to pull up the drawbridge and allow non European people’s to the make the best of what they have, are long past. Fortress Europe is gone and is not coming back.
Blaming the “left wing press” or the Labour Party or gloating about the problems that Sweden is struggling with is just so much garbage. Brexit and the isolationism that it anticipates is an illusion.
Get used to it.
"Taking the knee" .

I support the BLM protests.
Participants “take the knee”, I suspect, for a wide variety of reasons and in doing so draw attention to the issue of racism in a dignified and restrained fashion.
Those posters who characterise George Floyd as a “known criminal” are correct, insofar as he had a criminal record.
However, his life was brought to an end by the actions of a group of police officers, one of whom gratituously knelt on his neck for eight minutes while his life ebbed away and his colleagues looked on.
That he was a “known criminal” is irrelevant: is it right that anyone should lose their life at the hands of the police at the side of the road for alleged criminal conduct?
