  1. The thought of Corbyn winning a general election is nothing short of a nightmare. A person who could run this country yet despises everything the Queen stands for is unthinkable. Given his way he would have a hammer a sickle put in the corner of the flag. Sharia law would be given to anyone who wants it, free immigration, no armed forces and monuments like the Cenotaph dismantled to make a monument to Trotsky. He refuses to stand for the Monarchy or sing the National Anthem. Years ago he would be in the tower minus his head. He is a traitor to the British people and all that this nation stands for.

  2. Of course you can, I did ask for advice. I did what you suggest and found that my eye was 1/2"+ too high.

Stand in front of the mirror and get someone, preferably not HID (she may be a trifle over enthusiastic), to give you a good smack over the head. Repeated a few times it will eventually get your eye lower.

  3. A mate of mine used to live in Kent and we would quite often be found on the golf course, as is our want. Certain fairways were riddled with mole hills. We were walking down one and he suddenly stopped and took out his 9 iron. You'll never get on the green with that, I thought. He proceeded to line up on a mole hill and get set to play a shot. "Your ball is over the stream," I said. With that he took one almighty swipe and the head of the mole went in one direction and the body went in another. He turned round and had the biggest s### eatin grin on his face I have ever seen. "Got the ******!" he cried and sauntered off up the fairway to his ball.

  4. If you are unsure then you need to do a powder and shot drop chart to get the average. Set it up to load powder and drop about 20 charges, weighing them each time. Change the bush and repeat. Do this for each bush you have. This will give you an average load. Do the same thing with the lead or steel, whatever. I know this is time consuming but it will be the only way you will be able to make sure you are loading safe cartridges. If the drops vary greatly them try to establish a system. Eventuall they should settle down.

Each time you reload, you need to repeat this for a smaller number of drops as powder will settle differently. Best of luck and welcome to the hobbits in their man caves.

Make sure you keep supplies out of the way of small kids and nosey visitors.

  5. Give John a bell at Fes Kent. He is a mine of information and will put you right. Take a trip down there and get your supplies from him as well. He is extremely competitive as you will see from his website prices (####.co.uk). Save you the cost of paying the £40 or so cost of Hazmat charge for delivery of powder/primers.

  6. The main problem with the three gun cabinets is that the door doesn't open wide enough. The tang that prevents a bar going behind the door to force it off will interfere with any guns in the cabinet. Without care, any gun in the right hand side will get caught by this tang and get scratched.

As everybody has said, get the biggest one you can afford. For the two of you, a seven gun cabinet would seem to be correct. Shooting is very addictive and you will soon need to upgrade a 3 gun cabinet.

  7. Unusual to see more than 24 Blackbirds together!

We used to be able to say that about magpies. Not any more though. I have had 8 of the robbing things in my garden at one time, with more up in the trees in the neighbours trees.

I have a fruiting cherry tree in the garden which produces beautiful dark cherries if the starlings will leave them alone long enough. Sadly they get the majority of the crop.

  8. My SGC has run out before renewal twice now. The first time was 2011 and they issued the S7 but this year I rang in for a S7 and was told that the hold up was a only for the home security check and and I could carry on as normal. When I mentioned that I might want to buy some shells they just said it was "Too bad can't be helped". It's pretty obvious they don't like issuing the S7s any more.

They have to issue a Section 7 by law. Get on to BASC and they will get on to them. "Too bad, can't be helped!" is not good enough. You have to be in possession of a current Certificate. Yes they could phone up the Firearms Department and check but they wont. The onus is on you. Insist on a Section 7.

  9. Yes they need contact details of the landowner, where you will be using your rifle.then they will phone him,or sometimes meet him In person.

They will need to clear the land for shooting unless it has already been done. This is different from shooting with an air rifle as a .22 rimfire bullet can give you a very nasty headache from about a kilometer so it has to be safe. They generally go out and check the land with the owner or their foreperson ( nearly said Foreman, not PC ). My FEO went round the golf course with the Head Greenkeeper, even though I had been shooting with air rifle for a few years previously. You will need to include a letter of permission from the land owner with your application.

  10. Had to wait 12 weeks for my FAC renewal. That's even after a telephone interview. Mind you that's inside their projected 16 week published time scale. I read on one forum that some MP forgot to renew his SGC and has to now wait. He was most irate that he should not get preferential service and was going to take the matter up with the Home Office. Have a read of the post regarding the Bridgwater and West Somerset MP. I bet he gets it through quicker. Maybe they will give force a proverbial boot up the backside but I doubt it somehow.

They always come up with the excuse of the five year peak in renewals. If they know about it so far in advance they should get more staff in to cope with it or move to a ten year life. I know I'm talking to the wall as nothing will get done yet the other main party want to increase the cost to £200 but that will not improve the service. We will still be in the same situation, increase cost for a poor service. Fortunately my certificate came back with the renewal date 5 years hence so I have not paid for 5 years and got 4 years 9 months. That would really have ticked me off.

  11. I had a telephone renewal interview but it still took 12 weeks before my FAC came through. Bear in mind I sent it in and have the receipt for it being received on 25th April, when it ran out in September. That should be enough time in anybody's book. 12 weeks was even under their own time scale.

Welcome to the real world Mr MP. Now you know what we ordinary people have to put up with, and Labour want to put the cost up to £200.00? No chance! Why should you be any different. Sit back and put up with it, we have to.

P.s. I have heard of someone who waited 10 months for a grant of SGC.

  12. At last! Twelve weeks after my FAC ran out, my new one has just come through today. As I said in my previous posting, it ran out on 5th September. I sent the forms in with plenty of time to spare and finally, 12 weeks after the old one ran out, the new one came through the letter box today. Straight away I signed it, got me coat on and nipped to the RFD to pick up my expanding ammo. Nice to know that will be a thing of the past if the changes get royal ascent.

I was somewhat surprised to notice that the Essex Police web site state 16 weeks wait but this telephone renewal took 12 weeks, certainly an improvement. Long way to go yet though before we can say they are on top of the game.

Next job is to find somewhere to shoot foxes in Essex so I can get a .223. I am drawn between the Browning X-bolt and the Howa1500. Points for and against both. Got to find the land first. Anyone know of anybody wanting foxes controlled in Essex. I shoot bunnies on a golf course so may go down that route.

Anyway, must get down to reacquaint myself with my baby. I think a thorough cleaning is on the cards.

  13. You will save by reloading 28g carts. The main problem is going to be empty hulls. Have a look round the clay grounds, you may be able to pick some up there. If not then you are going to have to load new hulls so are not going to save as much. Primers, powder and shot are going to be the same whatever cart you are loading but try to get them locally, otherwise you are going to have to pay the HASMAT charge of about £30.00 for delivery. I get my supplies from John down at Folkestone Engineering Supplies in Kent. Give him a ring and he will help you out. A mine of information and very helpful.

Get all your supplies from one source. Someone who knows what they are doing otherwise you could end up with bits that don't work/fit.

A good starter press would be the Lee Loadall II. It will get you into reloading and if you find it's not for you, you can sell it on.

The most important bit is do your research.

    • Get a reloading manual (The ABC of Reloading, Lyman 49th edition) and read it a couple of times.
    • Watch reloading videos on U-tube.
    • Understand the risks involved - Remember you are using explosives.
    • Set up a reloading area out of the way of little fingers.

Now you have set up your man-cave you can get away from that damn square box and get on with something useful. Beware though, reloading can be very addictive but you do get what you want. It's a very goo addition to your hobby. You would do well to stay away from American powders as they can easily be twice the price of European powders. However that means the recipes may not be in the manual, so getting the supplies from one source should get you a recipe. Once you've got that, stick to it.

    Hope this helps.

    Dave.

  14. My FAC ran out Sept 5th and I had a phone call about three weeks ago. I'm told (I phoned them up Friday last) they should deal with it this week. I wait with baited breath but I ain't holding it (breath that is). This phone renewal is supposed to speed up the process but I am doubtful. I bet I won't get a rebate on the time I have been unable to use my rifle. The thing that galls me most is some people in government wanted to raise the cost to something like £200. Who do they think they are kidding?

We accept an increase in charges and then have to put up with this poor service. At one stage a load of FEO's walked out or left. It's not their fault. Their cuts have had to pay for the PCC, another level of bureaucracy, for what?
