  1. Eat less, move more.

I laughed the first time I heard it bit it's true.

I can only tell you what worked for me, so don't take it as gospel.

I cut out as much sugar as I could, limiting my intake, as near possible, to 27 grams a day.

I made sure I was drinking LOTS of water.

I ate 3 meals a day and tried to make sure that I had a varied diet including plenty of fish, chicken and red meat.

Gym sessions were 4 times a week, starting with 30 minutes of cardio and then on to weights/machines.

I tended to favour the bike or rowing machine for cardio as they give a fluid movement with low impact on my joints.

I did the same as you for weight training by mixing it all up so my body wouldn't get used to a regime.

I went from 22 stone to 18 stone in 10 months, then I levelled off.

For me though, cutting out the sugar seemed to yield the biggest improvement.

  2. Sparks down here are anywhere between £25 - £40 per hour dependant on experience and wether it's domestic or contract work.

I'm a recently self employed maintenance man, my flat rate is £20 per hour and I get about 95 percent of the jobs I quote on... my hourly rate will be going up again next year. 🖒

  3. In all fairness, I dont usually charge the material costs upfront.

The current job I'm on had £900 worth of materials needed... customer didn't even bat an eyelid when I asked him for the money last Thursday.

Got a massive decorating job in 2 weeks time, that customer is also fully aware that the materials need paying for before I start and they're more than happy.

As a general rule of thumb I usually put 10% on all materials, as others have said, as long as that doesn't make them more expensive than normal retail then I don't get any complaints.

We're all here to make money at the end of the day. 🖒

  4. After some advice really,

I recently completed a painting job for a customer - kitchen, dining room, play room, utility room and toilet.

Had a few niggles as the job progressed, mostly due to the customer not reading the estimate correctly and wanting extra bits done... no problem, just extra time in the job.

Finished up and emailed the invoice over as previously agreed, and the customer went quiet. Have messaged several times via email and mobile and also tried to call. The next step is to go and knock on the door...

Anyone had the same thing? What did you end up having to do?
