Tripe! You are talking out of a hole in yer bum! If you can spot what type of pigeon it is as it fly's over a ride in a wood you must have amazing eyesight!
Racers hanging out with woodies are no longer racers! They have gone feral....
Regards,
Gixer
gixer, racers hanging around with woodies have not necessarily gone feral. if there on a long race(5,6or even 700miles)they will roost up with other pigeons for the night,or come down with others to eat & drink.& if you shoot at a flashing glimps of a pigeon shape, that pigeon shape could be alot of things.it could well be that racer on a long race (that someone has bred, fed, trained, looked after & payed money on to enter a race)that might be on its way to winning the race & quite possibly a large amount of money & possibly a car. so what i am getting at is,if your out woody shooting you have to make every care thats its a woody you are shooting at.

I have accidentally shot about 10 stock doves in about 23 years shooting never shot a racer. You should be able to tell the difference between them espicially if you have been shooting for a while and if your not sure don't shoot.

why is the sky blue, why is grass green? Why do people feel the need to take the moral high ground on harmless threads that are put up for a bit of banter?
i was pointing out that you should do your upmost to identify what your shooting at,& having abit of banter about ilegal shooting of quarry shouldnt have been posted.
-
An old boy where I used to shoot did! He forgot his glasses and had a big shock when his lab brought it back to him. What do you do though? call the old bill??
if he needs glasses & forgot them & couldnt identify what he was shooting. why was he shooting???

My old man raced pigeons for over 35 years and was pretty good at it too. Won lots of races and prizes
God rest his soul
But he still loved to go out on the woodies with the 12 gauge.
But after all that time he could see the difference in just the way they flew from hundreds of yards away
Some racing pigeons can be worth a fortune, but others are culled at the end of a season to thin the stock down.
i race pigeons aswell & allso enloy going out on the woodys. yes the difference can be seen hundreds of yards away
as for a reply saying you cant tell by a fleeting glimps, thats not identifying your quarry
-
the thread started by saying i shoot a pigeon on the ground without hesitation. pigeons hanging around woods are ferel, are they? there is a big difference between a racer & a woody in flight!!! even a sparrow hawk when gliding over sometimes looks abit like a woody gliding in (do you shoot them aswell)positive identification of quarry is needed!!!as for a fancier killing a stray without ringing the owner first thats ilegal too
-
if a racer is in the field it doesnt meen its nogood as a racer,it could be on a long race & in need of food or water or just a rest.so it would come in to decoys the same as woodys.& im sorry but if you dont know the difference between a woody & other pigeons you shouldnt be shooting pigeons. as said shooting racers is ilegal
-
you not the only one Dave same here about 40+years ago worse thing it was a mates dads  Took the ring back and said i'd found it dead.
you shouldnt shoot anything if you dont know what it is what happends if it turned out to be a bird of prey or a game bird out of sesson. it is ilegal to shoot racing pigeons, & its nothing to about

it will defo be the plug, most car part shops should keep them. if not they will be able to order one

thanks for your replys. yes looking back the boy should have called 999. but as far as i was concerned he called me for a tow & i told him to anchor where he was.as for the coast gaurd not getting in the water,i didnt expect them to do that but they could have thrown the rope or helped by taking up the slack or something.but to stand there & do nothing, not even to help mooring back at harbour. a little assistance would have been a great help. & as for not giving a termily ill person a lift. thats just disgrasefull !!! yes lessons have been learnt, but at the time it was just a simple tow job. i have every admiration for the RNLI & the work they do. but on this day i felt let down by the coast gaurds that attended

got a call from the step boy yesterday afternoon saying he had taken a couple of mates ( one is termily ill with cancer ) out fishing & on the way back had engine trouble & the weather had turned & was drifting out of control towards the shore & can i help. so action stations. uncovered my boat witch was put away for winter, chucked a battery on it, made shore it started, hooked it on the car & off i went down to petrol station & then down the harbour, backed striaght in & floated her off. got another call from the boy saying he was being smashed up the beach , so i fired up my boat & off i went out the harbour, into quite lumpy seas. after a bumpy run ( airbore most of the time )i spotted the boat being pounded on to the shore & brakewater. approaching the shore i spotted 2 coastgaurds standing up the beach witch made me feel a bit better as more hands would be helpfull. getting close to the shore i could see the waves were big & rolling in & braking so itwas going to be hard to get close. so i turned the boat into the waves & slowly backed it towards the shore. getting as close as i dare i shouted to the boy to throw a rope to me. i had to knock the boat out of gear & catch the rope, tieing it off i shouted to take the slack out & to keep the rope away from my prop. not having much time befor i was washed onto the beach i dropped it into forward gear & BANG, the rope rapped round the prop. so over i had to go up to my chest in freezing water. freeing the rope & with a big push hauld myself back in. fired her up & shouted to take up slack . i got the thumbs up so dropped into gear & BANG the rope round the prop again. so with a few *"s & *"s over i went again trying to hold the boat & untangle the rope. ( all the time the 2 coastgaurd"s in all there high vize water proof gear just stood there not even atempting to help )with it clear i pushed the boat into the waves & climbed in. fired her up again & dropped her into gear & hooray off she went. so took up the slack & with steady pressure slowly eased the boat off the shore through the breakers & off into the swell. after quite a uncomfortble tow back to harbour, i came along side the slippway, where the coastgaurd was waiting. so throw my mooring rope, so they could tie me off, but they didnt even bother so my mrs who had turned up had to grab the rope & tie it off. then the cheeky coastgaurd said to me, well done, you did a good job there.so after a few more *"s directed at him i began to get the boats sorted. then when he came up to me & asked for details for his report, i told him where to stick his report.so he took the names off of both boats & left. it wasnt till a little later when the mrs asked where the others were & realised they were walking back to the harbour, she went to pick them up.when they got back i asked wye they didnt akse for a lift as the coastgaurd was at the beach with them. & they replyed they had & told the coastgaurd that one of them was termily ill & the coastgaurd refused to give a lift to them..... as a boater iv allways surported the coastgaurd & RNLI, but i am now disgusted with total lack of help they gave. im sure the RNLI do a great job but these 2 coastgaurd chaps where worse than useless......sorry for the rant!!!
