Saturday I tanked up with diesel last night as I was on a mega recce drive-about this weekend . After a long drive , I arrived at the farm just as they were starting up the combines and trailers ready to carry on cutting the rape. After a quick chat I found out what was being worked on and headed off to the opposite end of the farm to some newly cut fields. A few pigeons were dropping into a corner of the field by a spinney. I watched for a while and setup about 50yds up from the spinney. I had been there about 2 hours for 38 birds and then the DREADED harrower comes into the field and put paid to that idea. I had a quick drive round but nothing else about so I headed back to the farm we had shot 300 on last week. Upon arrival, there was the combine on a field I wasn't sure was theirs. A quick chat to the gaffer and he confirmed he was doing a favour for a neighbour as he was greatly behind harvesting due to a breakdown. I drove a couple of miles up the road to the farm and after a quick explanation on what I was doing he gave me permission to shoot the farm on a condition that I come back and sort out the rabbits and foxes. He had over 2,000 chickens in pens and wanted them protecting. "errrrrrr, oh alright then I guess" I said . he he he he. I drove back to the field and had a quick word just to make sure no bloody discers or harrowers weren't about to arrive. He said not till midweek. There were hundreds of pigeons dropping into 2 fields and I was just unloading my gear at the bottom of the small one when a jeep comes over and the son says "this is another farmer's field". I would need to get permission from them. Loads all my gear back in and off to the farm. The lady boss comes out and again I introduce myself and ask the question. She said I could and I asked if she would like any birds to eat. "not for me thanks I am a vegan, but I wouldn't mind having a go as I have 6 adults to feed". I promised her a dozen or so. I goes back and sets up my hide and spent a cracking afternoon on the birds finishing with 74 pigeons and promptly calls round to the farm. I gave her 20 birds and then showed her how to quickly breast the birds and crown them as well. I explained about salt soaking overnight and a casserole recipe, on how to cook them. She was so grateful I even had a text on the way home thanking me. MUST BE THE PACO RABANNE Total shot 112 x pigeons Sunday Out early for a few rabbits on a local farm and had 10 before I goes drive-abouts again.I found a shooter on the first farm but he was having a bad time of it. 2 hours for 3 birds after seeing a couple of hundred on the deck. I left him to it and after "clocking" another 3 farms I finally found a few hitting a farm that had cut last week and hadn't chopped the stubbles. I set up my stall but after 21 birds it went dead. Off on the road again and spots a combine on some fields cutting the rape. I drive onto the field and sat for an hour watching before the birds started dropping back in. I put out just the magnet and a dozen deeks on the very top of a hill with the wind behind me on the edge of a little spinney, and then drove round the back to watch. I am sat in my jeep with my gun alongside me when coming up the other side is a fox. Obviously spooked by the combine. He ran 20yards in front of me and I dropped him just before the end tree. After a short while I had shot half a dozen so then went and set up my hide properly. I was just walking back from dropping my jeep off and a Muntjac runs out from the spinney 10 yards up from the spot I had shot the fox. Could not believe it. Lovely markings!!!!!! About 6pm the farmer comes over with a couple of springer pups and sat chatting to me for about an hour. With the result that I could go out with him for the first time ever lamping for the foxes on monday night. I picked up 46 pigeons and went home. Absolutely top weekend, full of events and surprises and 5 more texts from the lady farmer saying the family thought her casserole was fantastic and could she have some more pigeons and possibly rabbits too. She can't wait to try her new found cullinary skills out again. And her future son-in-law wants to have a go too. Makes you feel good doesn't it. 67 x Pigeons 10 x rabbits 1 x fox Total shot 2 x new farms 179 x pigeons 10 x rabbits 1 x fox Dave K
