I was out the other night shooting rats around a dogs kennel on an old couples smallholding. The old sheepdog was locked in, but to be extra safe lifted up a piece of plywood laying on the floor to put against the mesh of the kennel.
Under it was a tunnel run leading to a nest. It was like a bird nest in shape, made very neatly out of short grass, about the size of a blackbird's nest. In it was 5 pinkie young, and I noticed they seemed to have largish heads.
So was it a rat, obvious, but a very neat nest. A mouse, but nest seemed too large, or a mole. The last two would be a bit daft being so close to rats, but as mentioned earlier the nest seemed to neat for a rat.
