What an end to a night’s lamping! This monster was quite close to a wood which I guess was his patch. We had shot 3 more earlier and were in the throws of packing up for home.
The wind was in our favour so off again across the stubble in the direction of the ruby eyes. I held the lamp a little above it and started calling while Olly was setting up on my quad sticks.
Very slowly it started to creep along a tractor rut stopping and looking our way, I turned the lamp off and Olly whispered I can still see him in the scope...
So we let him come a few more yards and I heard the safety click so I gave a squeak and flicked the lamp on…Bang……Whack
As you can see by the picture on my van he was a right brute, 47 1/2 inches with the head in that position. I guess if you had hung it on a hook and put the tape on him he would have been a 2/3 inches longer….but what you see is how he was.
