  1. I had planned to shoot a wheat field that had a decent number of birds feeding on weeds within the crop. However a bean field had been drilled for over a week, with quite a bit of spill and hadn't shown any pigeons but I decided to check it out before I set up on the wheat. I was met by over 400 birds feeding hard with 2 distinct lines joining them. So I changed plan there and then! It is a huge L shape field and I set up on the point that gave me command of the 2 lines, which unfortunately also looked straight into the surprisingly hot sun. I had 3 dead birds and 12 plastics, with a turbo flapper on from the start. There was hardly a breath of wind and the birds came from a great height. I replaced the plastics with shot birds and they decoyed brilliantly, dropping almost vertically into the pattern. I had some thrilling shooting at birds that seemed as if they were dropping right into the hide. Shot first bird at 1300 and last one at 1745. Picked 92 for a brilliant days shooting. I'd probably have shot more with a decent breeze but the variety of shots I had more than made up for that. One very tired dog and I have got the after sun on in copious quantities!
