    Large Bat

Walking the dog yesterday evening at dusk, I thought a Blackbird had just flown past my head but it turned out to be a larger than normal bat. We have lots of Pipistrelle bats round here, in fact I love to sit in the garden on a warm night and have them flying around me catching the insects, not that I attract insects mind you . This bat flew more like a bird, higher in the air than you see the pipistrelles, and had a larger body and wingspan - the flight action of the wings seemed to be more "rigid" for the want of a better word. I watched it over the school field next to us for a good few minutes, again - if you glanced for a second - you would think it was a bird but if you watched it there was the tell tale switch as it went for an insect and looking at the bat sites I think that it may have been a noctule bat. I will go out this evening around the same time and see if I can spot it again..
