Last week I had some serious trys at pigeon on drilled fields. There are not a great many birds about but sufficient to hold a shooters interest. Day one saw pigeon coming to the decoys with a lack of fear, a bag on 25 for 66 shots which I make a ratio of 2 : 64 shots per bird. That field was deserted the following day but found a few flighting across a valley and up the side of a wood only 8 birds for 16 shots . Day three at the favourite place where the farmer had described the pigeons not in numbers but as three acres of the blankety things. A difficult situation to shoot as it turned out facing both wind and sun but again 25 for 55 shots 2 : 2 shots per bird. Sunday the following day could not find any feeding birds so returned to Saturday's venue. Ideal conditions with the wind behind me, a better set up of decoys having brought some dead birds to add to the FUDs . I had changed guns as there was a problem developing with the Robert Hughs S xS, but the Pape had served well enough in the past. To cut as long story short after 20 shots and one pigeon down, a ratio of 20 : 1, I packed in with disgust at my total lack of marksmanship.
