An issue?

I have a Howa 1500 sportier in .223

Purchased a meopta 7x50 scope, fitted the bases then the low rings (Nikko sterling)

Wildcat predator mod (slight issue with it that is marked the barrel in the first outing and came lose at the over the barrel end blowing spent powder out.

(reading posts on this issue, it would seem that I need to have some shaved off the over the barrel end)

So the first outing.

Setting it up and trying to hit the mark before I would then have gone onto zero at a 1”high at 100yrds.

This is what I did,

After trying to get somewhere close to zero I started at 50 yrds and just could not really see if I was close to the target so back and forth I went leaving it a couple of minutes between each shot

To see the placed shot, I was shooting low so after a lot of adjustment. I was hitting within a 3-4”inches

Still not happy.

I purchased a range of ammunition so I started with the cheap federal eagle 50grn first just to put some rounds through it;

I read somewhere that you have to bed the barrel in and it would settle after a few rounds.

I was resting off the bipod prone and was getting somewhere close be it with 3-4”inches of aim and decided to move to another location to rest off the bonnet of the car.

As I thought it`s me not the new rifle,

Long storey short,

Set up again at only 15 yrds to get a better idea of hitting the mark and ran out of adjustment and still I was 1 ½” low.

I tried at this point to use different ammo

Federal 50grn

Remington 55grn

Sako 55 grn

And some other federal 50-55grn cant recall what it was but used it up anway.

and still had no change

It was so easy to run off 50 rounds or so and still not happy with the hitting close to the mark,

It’s still low by 1 ½ inches,

I quess my real question is,

Do I change the bases and rings as I think this is the issue with no more adjustment on the scope in elevation?

Or is it I am too close.

(All the equipment is new including the rifle)

My thoughts

I had a similar issue a couple of years ago with the hmr and simple just changed the rings to sports match as opposed to what I originally purchased.

Zero`d easy with loads of adjustment left.

I think it`s the bases and or maybe the rings and I should change them high, to what is another question?.

At such a short range as 15 yds the bullet has not had time to rise, if you imagine shooting at a target say 12" from the barrel you would always hit as much low of the target, as the scope is above the bore. No scope on earth would have enough adjustment to sort that out. Try at 100yds. Of course there may be other problems as well. It's just a matter of elimination. (which is incidentally how I got into reloading when I bought a duff rem700 that was costing me a fortune in bullets)
