Chainsaw drive tightening

Guys in the know, I need to tighten the nut on the drive "sprocket" of a small top bar saw, and presumably need to lock the crank at some point to gain the neccessary purchase, unless anyone knows of another trick i presume to take out the plug and hold the piston at a tad before TDC,

my question is if the above is correct, what is the prefered method for holding the piston without causing too much stress?

thanks in advance TP
