scuta
Hi Fellas, First I'd like to say great forum, fun, helpful and informative. I'm new to the whole Air Rifle world, my main passion being smashing clays. I've fallen into Air gunning through a need to rid my garden of squirrels (spending a fortune on a gun and all the kit makes so much more sense to me than squirrel proof bird feeders - my wife doesn't seem to agree!) I settled on a HW100 sporter in .22 (would prefer the flat trajectory of a .177 but can't afford any over penetration in the back garden) with a 3-12x50 Nite Eye SR6. Anyway 32 squidgers later........ A couple of questions......on a full charge (200 psi) I'm generally getting a grouping of 1/2" at 30 yards (supported) but with one or two 'fliers' (using JSB exacts) I thought it might be deformed pellets, but it doesn't seem to occur (or very infrequently) once I drop to about 180psi. Any ideas what would cause this? I've also noticed a lot mentioned about tuning. Could anyone tell me what this actually entales (in laymans terms). How much it's likely to cost, and what the practical differences it would make to my shooting? If you've managed to stay with me to here, thanks for you patience! Cheers

Cheers You have a good gun, I have 1 in .177 and can't really fault it. First option to combat flyers is to try different pellets, Barracuda Match/Bisley Magnums generally work well although they are on the heavy side. H&N FTT are good and a bit lighter, assuming they do them in .22. You'll need to run a decent amount through before groups tighten up. As for tuning, the HW100 is semi regulated (i.e. not a full blown reg but it has a two stage reservoir/charge mechanism) so it is generally pretty consistent. In the .22 you should be getting quite a lot of shots out of the tank as well. You can spend more on the gun sending it to someone like Ben Taylor (google BTAS) but for the money you might not be thrilled. Besides, it'll put your gun into the same price bracket as the Daystates (airwolf, mkIV), which are fully regged... Any ideas what would cause this? Not sure why it does it but I find that my s400 works best when I under fill in by about 20psi too. I never fill it to the brim.
