chasing birds

Got a 13 month old cocker bitch.

Walks to heal, responds to the stops whistle and has been doing some retrieving (although has started dropping the dummy short, so thats another thread I think).

But her attention is drawn towards blackbirds flitting in the hedgrows and on a few occasions whilst walking to heal, as bolted after one, with no response to the whistle.

She hasn't experienced game, but my worry is she is going to be likely to run in on game days and get me in bother off the shoot captain!!

Any advise appreciated.

cheers

Stu

If she's chasing blackbirds she'll chase everything else too, guaranteed.

You need to get her introduced to game in a controlled environment where you can correct her when she goes. A rabbit pen would be a good start, then some dogging in if you can get it before the season starts so you know what she's likely to do rather than pitching up to a day with a dog that hasn't experienced game. I'm sure that wsan't your intention but that certainly would get you grief from the Captain.
