Got myself a new permission without even looking for it!

I wasn't sure whether to post this or not as it may come as a bit of an annoyance to some of you folk who are still searching for that fairytale that is shooting permission. Having said that it could be a way for you to get it, so I thought I'd mention it.

I've got quite a bit of Rabbit, Pigeon and Crow shooting land already and I was out the other night on one of these farms. I'd wandered around the fields for a couple of hours and was getting quite bothered by the fact that I hadn't really seen much (I think I've shot a few too many at this place). At 8.45 I decided to wander over the track to another field owned by the same farmer and passed a gateway to a field owned by the chap down the road. As I walked by I noticed the fence had been cut and there was a bike trail going into the field. Luckily it was just a silage crop by the look of things so it wasn't too major but I thought it would be polite to drop by the next farm and just give the chap a heads up about what had happened.

Well I knocked on the door and spoke to the farmer. He was vry grateful that I'd pointed it out to him and asked what I was doing there in the first place (it's on a private road). When I said I was shooting Rabbits for the farm nextdoor and his eyes lit up and he said "I don't suppose you fancy shooting some of mine while you're out do you?". Well, that was a surprise. I've got enough land to shoot really but I do remember running a lamp across his field last year and there were more eyes than I've ever seen in one field ever, so I thought I'd give it a go.

I walked the fields he suggested and could see why he was so keen. There are patches on there that have been munched back that hard the grass has given up. It's just bare soil. Then for about twenty yards out into the field most of the way along the fence line it looks like someone's been mowing it! I think I'm going to do well here!

So I suppose it's a lesson learned. I know it's so much easier to get ground to shoot if you've already got somewhere but if you see a broken fence or an escaped Lamb, try your best to find out who owns it and drop in. You never know your luck. Perhaps instead of saying you were shooting nextdoor you could say "I was just out walking the gundog, I'm training him to ignore game until he's told to fetch and your field is the best in the area for Rabbits"?! Obviously only say that if there's a footpath running through, but you never know your luck!
