leonp9lbw
Hi, I am relatively new to pigeon decoying and I have just acquired permission to shoot some land near by. It is approx 500 acres of wheat, corn and maze. I went down today just for a look about and the wheat is just on the turn. I have read on here about shooting over standing wheat and corn, and basically asking for any advice you can give me to enable me to get the most out of this piece of land If I am completely honest I really don't know where to start as there is no obvious signs of where the pigeons are feeding , I could not see any crops laying down etc. I realise It will take time to work out flight lines etc but even doing this is new to me , how do you go about it and how long does it take. I have the basic gear rotary, bouncers, hide, and half shell flocked decoys. Any advise you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. TJ91
flightlines are generally quite easy to spot this time of year if there is pigeons in the area, i go to the highest bit of ground on the land i shoot and get the binoculars out, just keep looking around, if you spot a pigeon, watch where it goes...does it land in a tree, on some wheat, keep your eyes on him for a good while, see if others join, if they do follow them, find where they are coming from, if they arent feeding in any numbers on your land and are just passing by then get set up under the flightline. after harvest you will be able to see where the pigeons are feeding, stand just away from the field and watch where most of the pigeons come from. when you find a flightline, get under it close to where the pigeons are landing, chuck out some decoys and hope for the best have a read through some old posts in the pigeon shooting section, there isnt many questions that havent been answered shooting pigeons is all about watching them beforehand, dont just see a hundred pigeons in a field, rush in and put your deeks where they were sat i usually spend a good few hours the day before i shoot, sometimes everyday for 5days before i shoot. but some people dont have this luxury as the farmers want rid straight away another idea would be too find someone local to you to show you how to spot flightlines, what to look out for and how to go about making the most out of any situation hope this is of some help mate Edited July 21, 2010 by TJ91

TJ91
just thought, as my ground is hilly i can get a good view over most of the land from top of hill but if you are on flat ground, just have a drive about or even better, walk... if you walk about you may well send some pigeons up and find a small hidden corner where they are feeding in peace, you never know!
