apache
Hello is a good start. Try to have a general chat and see if you can steer the conversation around to the pigeons you have seen on his crops etc. Knocking on the door with a gun broken over your forearm asking if there 'owt wants shooting' will get you nowhere. Have a chat, listen and see how it's going. If he's brusque and unfriendly I wouldn't even bother. May be worth having some cards ready with your details to leave. If a bloke turned up at your door wanting to use a gun in your garden, would you let him straight away? I wouldn't!

soreshoulder
find a field thats being hit by pigeons and go and ask the farmer if he wants them sorting out free of charge, knocking on his door and asking if he needs anything shooting might gain you something but its best if he is experiencing a problem
