Calling with Buttolo

Went for a stalk this morning - far later than i would have liked, but i've got to work late tonight so couldn't really get up at the crack of dawn.

Surprise surprise i didn't see any Muntjac (though they always appear in the daytime when i've not got a rifle in my hand).

Had a sit up and a call with my Buttolo - and out from the woods a Stoat bounded towards me - he stopped pretty damn quick once he'd noticed it wasn't an easy meal though.

Those Munties, you can creep around and sit in a high seat for hours and only see footprints, the last one I shot just appeared in the middle of a mown field. A rabbit hurtled past me legs at about 50mph and I thought I would see a fox in the field. When I peered around the hedge to see, there was a fine Munty buck about 60 yds out, he ended up as a mix grill about an hour later.( Muntie kidneys, heart and especially the liver Mmmmmmmmm ).

We have a light population of Roes and the only thing I have managed to attract so far are foxes, if you give the bottolo a quick hard squeeze for a distress bark the foxes will usually answer, well they do around me. Sqeaked two fox cubs in yesterday evening, came within 2 yrds, how you boys can shoot em I don't know. They are protected on my biggest permission, the owner is head of the local hunt and beween the local landlords they manage the population to suit (did someone once say hunting was banned !!!!!!). You can obviously tell they don't breed pheasants round here.

Ps the stoats in your area must be hard little beggers if they see Roe as dinner.
