border Scott
I am training my first dog. She is a 8 month Lab bitch and i am really enjoying it so far. At the moment i would be satisfied with a basic shooting dog but think that if i got that i would want more from her as we progress. Im in no rush and dont want to spoil her but at the same time i wonder if things are on track. My question is. In the real world and not from a book what would you expect a dog and handler to be able to do at 8 months?
beltabout
A really good book to buy and read is Susan Scales Retriever Training. At 8 months depending on the dog, i would have just started some basic training, so the dog will walk to heel on and off lead. Will sit and stay while i walk off and return (perhaps out of sight) will recall to whistle. I will have started stopping on the whistle and may be doing some seen retrieves again depends on the dog, they really are all different.
