bigjimmer
I notice everybody is saying how cold the Barbour's are. Does nobody have the 'warm pile' detachable linings or any of the others? I have sat in hides in freezing conditions and been perfectly warm. In-fact i have been known to remove the lining when lugging things about or going on a particularly long walk. It's ok though, it can just about be stuffed into one of the pockets. Perhaps it depends on the type of coat.
jacksdad
Belstaff and (if you were posh!) Barbour wax cotton was always the main motorbiking gear, when I was a lad Lasted years and never leaked, but they did smell a bit ripe, specially with used engine oil and chainlube added! Have you seen the price of the jackets these days....
baikal boy
I had a Barbour Solway coat years and years ago as they and Belstaff were the only things available. I suppose I had it for about 10-12 years. for the last 3-4 years of its life it was consigned to use when out ferreting, as the material had started to wear thin around the flex creases and abrasion points. How have you managed to get yours to last 25 years i just sponge it down with cold water only just to get any crud off air it properly and rewax it simples and dont care about the stink has i keep it in the outbuilding paddy Edited January 12, 2011 by baikal boy
baikal boy
I think that is a bit harsh, quite a few people tried to help you. You have made 2 posts, one of which asks for help and the other that is rather rude to most of those who tried to give it... i tend to agree zapp it was rather rude paddy. Big Zoot
I've just come across this thread. I bought one on eBay for £25 for rough shooting - the coat is in great nick, but was absolutely stinking of damp and mould (not the normal waxy smell). I tried saturating the lining with Febreeze - that got rid of about 90% of the stench but it still wasn't right. Next I tried turning it inside out and scrubbing the lining with bicarbonate of soda dissolved in water and let it soak in for a couple of hours. Then I rinsed it off in the yard with a hose and hung it up to dry. I now have a normal smelling Barbour. Bicarbonate of Soda is the answer! Danny Corcoran
I have a Barbour padded jacket and have a problem with the odour. I have to wash it every time I wear it. I don’t have a problem with any other jackets. The advice in this thread seems confined to wax jackets. Can anyone offer advice about getting the fusty smell out of Barbour padded jackets?
