ESS won't drop

Hi everyone,

We have a male ESS about 18 months old now. He'll will quite happily go and retrieve objects in the house / out in the field. But when it comes to dropping them he gets to just out of reach then turns away. If you ignore him, he just walks around with whatever he has picked up, he doesn't try to chew, he then just sits there.....Until you go near him then he walks off... he doesn't run away and you can take it off him, but I don't want to be walking around chasing the dog!

Any tips ?

Thanks

Adam

You could go back to basics,,,forgetting the dummy at first and just getting down low and calling the dog to you, so he comes right into you.

Then once this happens try the dummy retrieve again, but again concerntrating on him coming into you not the dummy, then once happy then call him in and get him to sit and issue the dead command etc.

If he still runs around place him on a lead and give im a tug to get him in tight..

all of the above i did with my Springers at some stage.

The lab pup i have just been calling her into me, but getting her right in close, then of late i have been throwing a few dummies ensuring she sits and then when im happy i let her have a retrieve, but concerntrating on her coming in tight etc

Just got to make the return thing more fun for the dog then the actual picking up of the dummy

Have fun

do you try and take the retrieved item off him straight away?

if so, let him hold onto it more while you fuss him.show him lots of praise get him really excited in coming into you.

have you got a long lead?.you could use one to help encourage him into you and until he's happy retrieving to hand keep it in the garden so he associates it with play and not training.taking him out training will only add more stress and be more likely to fail :good:
