Firearms licencing in Republic of Ireland

I need somewhere to write this down not too sure if any one really cares but the licenceing system in R.O.I is an absolute joke from the time of filling out the form and handing it in the local garda station it took about 4 months to get the licence, I know people who've been waiting near a year for there's its an absolute disgrace and I hope something serious is done about it before they need to be renewed in 3 years time

I`m not being funny or anything but a serious question.

Is the processing time down to poor management of the relevant department generally allowed to take their time processing the application or does the whole terrorism thing play a part in the processing time?

In my opinion its down too the fact that the garda dont want anyone to be in posession of a firearm and they have very little knowledge on the the subject of firearms(which is obviously the case everywhere I no)they tend to be very careless with the applications and like to drag it out for as long as possible legally were meant to here word back from anything between 2wks and 2 months which never actually happens. We had a case a few months ago were a number of applications were lost :o I also heard of a story were a man handed an application looking for a .22 rifle and the garda at the desk said theres no way he'll get it, it's too powerfull of a rifle and he wouldnt even send the application off if he was him. So the man in question left it at that and a few days later he left in an application for a .243 and the same garda said "Well now your talking thats more like it" Clueless or what?
