pete1dart
After a 2 week lay off because of my car braking down and baby sitting duties last weekend i was chomping at the bit to get out and more than anything get some fresh air. I hadnt been up the farm since the 1st feb, but after watching pigeons hitting 1 of our maize strips all season i decided that i would start off there. Met my mate at 0830 and went down to the maize to have a look. It was teeming with rain so I wasnt expecting to see an awful lot. We got down there and there were around 20 on it with a few in the trees. Behind the drive is a field of Lusin? grass that the pigeons havnt touched for around a year. When this was put in the college manager was determined to keep the pigeons off, and i think we did a too good job of doing that! The grass had around 400 on it. But i took an executive decision that the maize would be the place. I know this might sound daft but i just had a feeling. Set up with 20 decoys and the magnet straight in front of the hide. The maize hasnt been topped so i tryed to clear a bit too make the decoys show up a bit. After around 10 mins 1 dropped in. Missed by my mate. Any way it was a bit slow, with only 1 being shot in 2 hours. I had an eye on the grass but nothing dropped into it. My dad phoned too say that he was up the top of the field so i lleft my mate to it and went up to see him. Got the binos out and could see alot of pigeon pouring out of one of our woods to a rape field across the road that is our neighbours field. Went back to my mate, packed up and off we walked to the wood. I had been wanting to leave this for a roost shoot later in the day but i wasnt going to sit out in the rain for a couple of shots on the maize. We got up there and the small wood erupted with pigeon. I have never seen so many birds up there. I picked my spot and waited. We were getting a few birds coming over highish but killable. I mmanaged to bag 6 when my mate had to go at 1300. After then it went made. Birds where coming in from everywhere. Not just the rape field across the road but from over from sparsholt college. They must have some rape over there somewhere as alot of the birds had rape in them. Some with ivy berrys and some with maize. Around 1600 we started to get the flocks from across the road. But i had enough by then. I had 24 too pluck so got stuck into them. My dad had 6. He wasnt shooting very well but my 24 were for 62 shots. I was pleased with that as I havnt picked the gun up since 1st feb. Im going back thursday afternoon to have another go. Hopefully the result will be even better! pete1dart
I sure did. Beats being stuck in the office all week and waiting for the little man to grow up so he can come out with me.
