Ferretboy111
Just wanted to say that im rather annoyed, having missed 2 perfect pigeons and a magpie with my Bsa hornet 177. air rifle. Everytime i scope it up its either too far or too close so i forget how much give i need to give the pellet height wise! ill get there in the end!!! Natures_son
if its .177 you shouldnt have that problem
Axe
Alex, you should stop shooting at live targets and practise on paper targets until you have learnt the correct hold over. Its something that most of us do and from time to time. It will only take an hour or so, just set out targets at the distances you are struggling with and work it out. Once you have made your observations write it down and stick it iin your rifle case, or, as has been advised to me, stick it on the inside of your flip covers, if you have them. Lancs Lad
Would have to second axe on that one, if you are missing sitters on a regular occurance due to the varied ranges then - - - Stop hunting and start plinking. Im probably down on the range MORE than I am out hunting, having a P.A. scope helps when ranging shots, also with the HAWKE SR the scope markings assist quite a bit when aiming off. I now quite happily shoot at 30yd, drop to 10, range out to 45s and hit what Im going for. Getting down on the range will give you the great opportunity to mix and match your shot ranges, practice makes perfect. Also will help if you have a mildot scope, what type of reticle is on your scope. And are you changing the magnification when you are taking each shot...... bindi
Agree with axe, practice on paper to get this right. If you zero at 20yds with a 12ft ibs .177 rifle then the zero will be the same at 10yds and 30yds, give or take a few millimeters. If they are closer than 10 yds, you might as well just lob a brick at them because they'll have clocked you and flown away by the time you have a pellet in the barrel, bindi
SNAKEBITE
Ofcourse not forgetting that if you are shooting UPWARDS into a tree you need to aim lower as you do not need the hold over (as much) due to gravity have less of an effect. Don't ask me to get technical as the name ain't Issac
whitelegghw77k
Try downloading the Chairgun2, once you have entered the necessary data. Scope height Pellet used What distance you've zeroed you scope at. It gives you a usefull chart showing the expected pellet trajectory, you can read from this what hold over/under you should be using. Also in the widgets section you can generate a reticule picture showing the hold over/under for different distances. Tried this yesterday as I was experiencing pigeons at under 10m, when my scope was zeroed for 30m! Got one before I went to work, it was eyeing up my winter salad seedlings!! (Pest) 1. See pigeon on lawn. 2. Load rifle. 3. Quietly open back door by 2 inches. Not enought movement to spook pigeon. 4. Rest gun on bean bag on the door handle. (Its a springer!) 5. Calculate hold over/under based on 5m markers down the garden. 6. REMEMBER to take off the saftey!!! 7. Goodbye pigeon. Pete

You must give your quarry the respect it deserves.
Ferretboy111
Hello again, managed to get out for abit today with her and bagged 2 woodies, however im very worried with the inconsistancy of my shots at paper targets, i can scope it up at 30 yards but get the odd one or two which just go way off! i use accupell pellets and havent had any troubles with them before! i think something may be corrupt in the gun itself to keep getting such varied results. Alex Is it a new gun? If so you might not be using the best pellets for the barrel. Try a few other pellet makes and see what results you get. Are there other variables you have not taken into consideration? Such as wind or the power curve of the rifle? Are the shots rested or standing? If standing you might just get the odd flyer due to inconsistent technique. Sorry to sound a bit negative but there could be so many reasons for the flyers it could be a while before you nail it. farmerguy.22
If i was you id get that twitch seen to keebs!! No joking aside it is weird u r getting probs now when you have been on the nail with it before. Could tell that from when u were over zeroing it up bout 2mnths ago. Try diff pellets as snakbite sugests but if it continues.... As a last resort you will just have to get it looked at although it is only a few years old! Axe
First thing I'd do is check the inside of your moderator if you have one, you might find the odd pellet hitting. If this is the case inspect the pellets that you are using. Check to see if the odd one is deformed or squashed. Perhaps you have dropped the tin? After this I would mount the gun on a stand of some sort to stop it from moving and fire 10 shots at a time observing the results then; Remove the moderator and try the rifle again to see if this inproves. If not then have a look at the crown. If you have a moderator fitted and have not removed it regularly you might find the crown has corroded. If all of this has no effect then you might have internal problems and will need to get the rifle serviced properly.
