Gimlet
Bought a pair of Nikon Sporter bins from Uttings yesterday and they'll be getting them back tomorrow. A set of genuine Nikon for £150 seemed worth a try, but no. Don't bother getting these. Sharpness is not as good as my old Bushnell birding series they were meant to replace and edge to edge resolution is rubbish. Panning across a field the image appears to bulge in the centre as if it were running over a ball. Felt queasy after a couple of minutes of that. Also the pivot in the centre between the tubes that sets the eye width is too slack. Using them one handed and turning the focus ring they start to fold up. And they're made in China. Question is, what to get instead. Could spend a bit more and go for Nikon Monarchs. Are these proper Nikons or made by communists? I'm minded to stick with Bushnell. Couldn't fault the old ones before I scratched them.
garyb
Have a look at these.. I bought a pair last month on the back of a couple of reviews from the SD, they even sent them out for me to try before I parted with any money! £100 or near enough, and I've been very impressed with them for the price - as was Stealth Stalker when we were out looking for dusk foxes the other week. http://www.strathspey.co.uk/shop/full.php?q=1189942265 Edit - here is the review from the SD http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?13797-bino-review&highlight=strathspey Edited July 26, 2011 by garyb
Gimlet
Cheers for the tip off. Read the review and think I'll give them a try. Particularly like the lens caps. I wear my bins on a bino caddy and spend a lot of my time lying prone in stoney wheat fields. I never remember/have time to take lens caps on and off. Which is probably why my old Bushnell's eye lenses are knacked. And all the more reason not to spend stupid money I haven't got.
garyb
Like I said.. if you don't like them you can send them back it seems! Whilst I doubt they are the same quality as a Swarovski pair, they certainly look better than the £80-100 retail price! So should easily compete with the likes of Bushnell. John is the owner of the company, and couldn't be more helpful. They offer other mag options but 8x32 seems to suit my stalking. garyb
How did you get on?
Gimlet
Bought a pair of 8x42 WP. Love em. Don't know how he does them for the money. They seem very solid weighty and well built. If they last as well as they look like they should I will be very happy indeed. Much obliged to you for the tip-off.
1in9
I have a pair of 8.5 x 45mm Nikon Monarch X bins, very pleased with them. They have the edge on my shooting buddy's 8x42 Leupolds in twilight, thanks to some fancy coatings £329 from Warehouse Express http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-nikon-monarch-x-8-5x45-dcf-binoculars/p1520035 which is more than £100 cheaper than what my local dealer could get them for at trade!
