Please before you quote the law, check you understand it.

This is what you can and cannot do....

Age under 17 but 15 years or more

Yes...

Possess section 1 firearm

Receive gift of Section 1 Firearm.

Possess assembled shot gun

Receive shot gun as gift

Possess Air Weapon

Receive Air Weapon as gift

No...

Purchase any Firearm or Ammunition

Possess air weapon in a public place

Note - for Air Weapons this is EXCEPT if at you are at a Rifle/Pistol Club or cadet corps, at a Miniature rifle range or if it is in a Secure gun cover (but this exemption is not available in respect of air pistols).

So you can legally do both, although I don't think the public transport bit is a good idea unless you use a case that isn't obviously a gun case - ie so that folks dont realise what you're carrying.

You can carry one in a public place however you are constrained by the same rules that all shooters are irrespective of age, namely don't have it loaded, keep it covered and have a good reason to have it with you - i.e. be carrying it directly on the way to or on the way back from shooting, most definitely not via Tesco, Marks n Spencer or the Bank!
