Reloading criteria...

Hi,

for those that reload shotshells, i`ve got a few questions...

is there a fps you prefer to load lead up to?

do you load up to the maximum BAR that your shotgun can take?

do you just grab some data and reload whatever ?

do you reload a recipe because the components are easily to obtain?

do you reload different shotsizes?

do you load as little powder as possable that bangs?

what is your main criteria? fps or bar?

just trying to understand some loads i got sent.

i load up to about 1200fps.

i load up to about 10000psi - 690bar burns well and great performance.

no i dont load up to the max, 11500psi is as far as `ll take it, 790bar

i grab alot of data, but discard what doesnt seem right.

i reload loads that are just fun to shoot.

yeah, different shotsizes too.

i try not to skimp on the powder, sometimes the fun loads just dont respond well.

Hi Cookoff013,

I am trying to start loading cartridges and got a load of Kent velocity shells (Chedite) but find that the recipes all have wads that are no longer available, which is a bit frustrating or they are for powders I can not easily locate.

My intentions are:

load up to about 1200fps.

load up to about 700bar max.

no i wouldnt load up to the max, the variation in the load could prove costly

i am trying to get lots of data and then understand it.

different shotsizes and weights 4 and 6, 28-32g Also looking for some 38-42g bb data.

It's early days in my re-loading career and I'm currently trying recipes that suit the powders I possess just for fun. Supplies are thin on the ground here and I am currently using 15mm fibre wads and thick cards to achieve the correct stack height when I'm sure using plaswads would be easier.

Cookoffs subs have made shooting reloads a pleasurable experience, but the reloading has been a pain due to the fibre wad issue.

Suppliers are missing a trick, they should sell a full kit, with powder, mixture of shot sizes and plaswads to suit and advice on which hull to reload.

A small anxiety lies in departing from the script through problems sourcing the exact components.

plaswads are easyer to reload, but not for the loads that have low amounts of powder. thats a problem. fibre wads do fit better in hulls because the heights are variable and can be added to. whereas plaswads have certain obturator profiles and set heights. although i`m seeing more and more loads where the shot peeks over the petals.

the manufacturers will never release kits, even supplyers are reluctant to do this, clay and game were going to release kits.... but failed to do so. they missed a gap in the market.

i find changing shotsize way better that getting new powders for distance or game shooting. for me thats the ballistic advantage over way more recoil.

cook.

ste,

1200fps is a good speed, the shot has energy, without blowing the pattern. faster loads open out faster, good for skeet, bad for game.

what powders do you shoot? i`m sure most can help.

700bar is a nice pressure to run at, quite clean burning, meaning its using up all the chemical energy stored in powder.

understanding the data is hard, the psycology behind every load is quite interesting. most lads have a purpose, ie, cheap clay slayer, or high performance vermin load etc. where some loads i look at and, think why on earth are they using such a high /low pressure for such little speed. some published loads just are not right. thats why there isnt pressure data with some.

i like shooting big shotsizes.

if you need any data on the 38 -42g loads pm me..
