Species day on the family shoot

Had our last of three family shoots of the year today. Truckboy came down from Dorset to join us. After feeding sunday, we did not see many birds and hoped to get a bag of twenty. Well ten of us set off, working thick hedges with spaniels and pushing out small woodland to give a mini driven and walked up day. Soon had three species in the bag, pheasant, crow and woodcock after working through some thick bramble bordering a pig unit. I flushed the woodcock to Truckboy who downed it with one shot from his 28 bore. River drive was the best as always, putting a brace of mallard into the bag, both shot by Truckboy, plus several pheasant. A teal and snipe were unfortunately missed but the next drive put in a brace of French partridges. I added a long range wood pigeon to join another we already had, and we did our only wood to produce another woodcock and more pheasants. I had put a Fenn trap out under a feeder yesterday and was delighted to have my first ever catch of a squirrel, and another quickly met his demise with a shot from my 20 bore as he ran up a tree. Good shooting was had by all with everyone contributing to the bag. Total for the day was 39 pheasant, 3 french partridge, two mallard, two crows, two wood pigeon, two woodcock and two squirrels for a total head of 52.

Sounds like you had a good day

Shame about the snipe and teal though. I shot my first snipe 2 days ago and cant get over how I did it from the distance I was at - they are so small.

do you guys do walked up days on your shoot for a fee? or have a syndicate on it?

Rosebank

Its just close friends from our main shooting syndicate and family. Three generations from two families mainly. We only shoot it three times a year because it we shoot out pheasant syndicate the rest of the season. Always get a mixed bag, and over the years have shot a very wide range of quarry. Its been going for 40+ years so must be doing something right :)

Its such a great atmosphere, and one of the guns, a good mate of mine, went up to his waist in water which made us all laugh, him the hardest ;) damn good sport, nice food after, plently of friendly winding up and jokes, good dog work, and all with friends and family, what more do you want
