Calm down people. I assume the dog is on medication? This is where the problem almost certainly lies.

For vets to supply or prescribe prescription only medication to an animal that animal, by law, has to be "under the care of a veterinary surgeon". Now there is no specified term in law for how often a dog must be seen to be under the care of a vet but the guidance suggests that the dog has been physically examined sometime in the last 6 months. For a stable dog on heart or arthritis medication that may be enough, but many cases may need seeing much more frequently.

We would only allow prescription or supply of prescription only drugs in animals that had been seen in the last 6 months. Assuming you are a responsible dog owner the booster visit would count and you'd have 1 consultation fee to pay over the year. Hardly hanging you up by the ankles to shake out every last penny.

Happy to answer further questions.

Drugs are on prescription for good reason. Also there can be quite serious effects on the heart from taking steroids and if your dog has a heart murmur I'd want to make sure things were going on ok. Whether the dog needs further testing would depend on what was found in the examination and what you want from your dog! I don't know what tests you refer to?

The vet will (or at least should) just offer what is the best care for your animal. Every single day I see a dog brought in for a vaccination or a medication check and I find something wrong the owner had not noticed. It's not rare.

i would try and book your appointments with the same vet each time, then at least you and the vet know where your feelings lie regarding certain treatments and passed discussions.

as apache says his current condition can be discussed when he has his booster saving another consultation fee.
