Starting with rabbits

I recently got my pest control variation on my FAC. So I'll be able to take my .22 out after rabbits. But I know next to nothing about it so am looking for any useful advice.

I'm an experienced full and small-bore target shot, but have never used a rifle on live quarry. Obviously, safety has to be my first consideration. But after that, where do I start?

I might move on to lamping but, initially, I don't want to shoot at night.

I've shot a few rabbits with my shotgun while out after pigeons, but I've never studied their habits. What time of day would be best?

What range should I zero my rifle at? I read somewhere "75 yards". Is that about right? Seems a bit far to me.

Thanks

.22 subs zeroed at between 50-60yds produces the best MPBR (the window where you point, shoot and hit what you are aiming at) usually around 70-75yds before you need to start ranging and holding over to account for drop

get some targets up at 30 -100 yds in 10yd increments, will get you used to estimating range and drop

40gr solid lead has a tendency to zing off anything not made of soft mud. angle of inclination is your friend. shoot from high or into raised backstops if possible

depends on your rabbits, some will sit out in the midday sun, others only at full dark.

the .22 can be loopy if you have been shooting at a fixed range.

as a start I would ambush a rabbit warren and stay still.

this keeps your range fixed.

move on to walking/lamping unless you have a driver and a lamp man who is happy to ferry you round the fields at night.

walking and shooting off sticks is very rewarding.

a scope mounted light with forestock mounted switch can be picked up pretty cheap and see you lamping alone on a budget

get to know your ground in daylight before you start lamping.

head shot rabbits get you more meat and money at the butchers.

chest shot ones are bigger targets

good hunting
