PandaMagee
Hi, i am wondering if ESS are hard to train, and when would be the right time to start training them for field work? I am considering getting another one. i had one a few years back, but sadly had to give it away for genuine reasons. and i know they are a lovely dog. Thanks for your help
fenboy
Get one with a good working pedigree then it will not be difficult to train at all as long as you can do your part, get one with a poor or non working pedigree and it can be like trying to train a fly to stay away from cow **** ! If it were mine I would be training the basic commands from around 5 months with more serious stuff from 10-12 months , pay particular attention with retrieving for a start get them fetching a toy from a young age but dont over do it , spaniels love hunting so much they can sometimes try and skip the retrieving part !! PandaMagee
thanks fenboy, is there any particular feature a pedigree has, compared to a dud? or get one with all KC papers?
fenboy
If you get one with KC papers make sure it has a working pedigree with plenty of FTC and or FTW in it , the dog must be working rather than show stock. Get one with no papers then make sure you know it comes from good working stock and ask to see both parents working.
