jackinbox99
Ive got a lovely little Spanish folding .410 sbs on which the barrels look like they are nearly brand new. But the action is chrome plated and looks like its seen better days. The chrome is coming off in places and looks a right state. Id like to bring the action up to scratch to match the nice barrels. Googling seems to reveal the way to do this would be to have the action dipped in some sort of acid to remove all the old chrome before then re-chroming - but apparently its a very costly process. Another article I read suggested just sanding the chrome / action all down and powdercoating it which would stick fine to the key`d chrome surface. Anyone on here got any experience of either or suggestions? The gun`s only probably worth about £100 and although its got a lot of sentimental value having been in my family for a while, i dont want to spend a fortune on it. Other online suggestions seems to be to use brake fluid, bleach, Mr Muscle oven cleaner or even coke cola! Anyone tried any of these? hchris
You should be able to have it reversed chromed this were it is put in the same tank and the process is reversed. We had this done on some old chrome bumpers. Find some one that chrome plates and talk to them. Chris
ptrangmar
hchris is dead right. Get it de chromed properly as trying to acid etch it off with also remove metal where you want to keep it. Then have a go at case hardening the action. Polish it up and use "casenite" with some bone charcoal mixed in for a nice finish.
dingo45
Far from hardening the action again , Chroming in the first place hardens the steel I dought if our Italian friends had the action De -embrittled which is the norm. So I would guess the action is hard surfaced now . Try it with a scriber where it will not show.
