jfgpm
HI there, this week I had been invited to a grey goose hunt. The area is pretty flat with a lot of quarry ponds. Grey seem to love that place because in the early morning we counted over 250 over and beside us. We went out at 6 set up the layout blinds and first my friend put out all his decoys. Quite an amount, so we got pretty warm ;-) I was wondering if the geese would believe us because the layout blinds couldn't be hided on the flat field (if someone of you has a good idea how we can hide better please let us know) really well. It was our first try on such a clean field and with snow. At about 7:15 the first geese were attracted by our pattern but turned away after they get closer than 70m. Strange. Well lets wait. The wind changed and the next flock was coming from our left right into the pattern. It was still dawn. 5 could be shot out of 7. Because the layout blinds where to small for the German Deutsch Langhaar I had to collect the birds. On my way out about 50 geese where suddenly in the air and getting closer. I think we scared them with our shots and searched for a undisturbed place. Damn. To make a long story short. We had many geese approaching us but before the got closer than 60m they had been scared by ? (we don't know) and escaped. Only one more goose could be shot. It was a real pity the see all the birds flying towards us and than escaping or just passing by. But it was a wonderful morning and I won't forget those pictures and moments. The cam went on strike so I had to take photos with my mobile cam :-( Explaining the layout blind to a "new" hunter Out of all reasons why the geese first come pretty close just to escape then. FUDs and some normal decs Landing zone Dawn. A wonderful morning ! .philmypower.
Looks like a fantastic flight to me, sometimes they don't like something and they won't commit, other days you could do exactually the same and hey presto. Well done, love the pics.
jfgpm
Hi .phil. Thank you. I think we just need more snow to be able to hide the blinds better.
laurona12
Looks like a cracking morning. Done lots of goose shooting but never from lay out blinds- bet its good being so close to where the geese are committed if their coming right. We only use 3,2 up to 3,6 mm steel shot shells and the geese have no chance. Normally you have a shooting distance between 10-35m not more because you can direct them right in front of you. The other nice thing about a layout blind is that it is very cosy. Even in harsh conditions (wind, low temps.) you have a perfect shelter and with some blankets you are always warm ;-)
