kent
Thanks, I've tried a few 100 grain rounds Winchester privi and federal and they didn't group very well. 90 grain sako game heads also weren't ideal. I'm using 55 grain Winchester bt's at the moment, they were ok at 100 yards but opened up to about 3" at 230 yards. I'm about to start reloading so would like to get a good idea of what works best before I buy. Ideally one load for fox and deer, so a soft point 70 or 80 grain would be ideal. Don't be fooled genuine solid reliable 3" groups at 230yds is quite good and far better than many can actually achieve. Forget the whole "soft point" thing its an out dated misnomer, for best terminal performance in the .243 win you really need to delve a bit deeper and experiment past what a bullet looks like. About ten years ago I went right off the .243 as I lacked this know how- I doubt I will ever be without one now. Blood ruined opposite shoulders on deer, lack of blood strike / adequate penetration, pencilled foxes were all driving me to distraction. You need to accept there is no Red deer to fox perfect bullet, no one load does all, the nearest you will come is a 95 grn solid base Nosler b/tip from my findings based on more than a few years testing but it isn't as good as the 70grn faster fragmenting stuff on foxes and you wont get the deep penetration you get with say a 100grn partition on Reds etc
