Dud .22 Winchester subs. Click, phut and phit.

Last month I started a new box of Winchester SX .22 subsonics and had trouble with misfires and not recycling in my Magtech semi, but as I went down the box things improved, with no misfires and good accuracy. I started on another box of fifty and all was well, until today. With the last eighteen bullets from this new box, I went out for couple of hours walk round one of my more wooded permissions. I didn't expect much to be doing due to the cold wind, but saw about a dozen rabbits and got within 60 yards to take a prone shot off my gun bag. I had the last eight in this clip and fired, "click". Ejected the bullet and saw the case had been struck. I tried again, this time there was a "phut" from the chamber. On inspection there was smoke in the chamber, but the bullet was intact and had been struck. The rabbits were still there, being upwind, so I tried another shot, this one leaving the barrel with a "phit" and hitting a puddle 25 yards away, scattering the rabbits. The semi had not recycled and the case sat on the top of the next bullet. The next three were one click and two phuts, all bullets struck, but none leaving the casing. The last two fired and recycled normally. I fitted the other clip of ten and all fired perfectly. I then loaded up with a few of my last Eley subs, returning to this area later to find the rabbits out again, but wary, managing a successful shot at about eighty yards. I've got one more box of Winchesters left, do I trust them?

Do make sure your pin is not gummed up and some travel is not lost.

Also check the pin is not damaged from striking the barrel when the gun is empty (dry firing).

Check no bure in the chamber from dry firing stopping a round head spacing correctly.

If you do have not enough pin protrusion relieve the stop a few thou'.

Next time you have a miss fire make sure the bullet left the barrel to avoid a ringed barrel.
