BenHammer
I am just starting out pigeon shooting and was wondering which ground would give me the best practice for the field? I know there are a few grounds around northamptonshire and was wondering which one people recommend?
jackinbox99
Quite a few around here, theres Northampton Clay Ground, theres Sywell, theres Riseley, theres one called Sporting Targets just off the a6 towards Bedford, plus a few others. Most people i know seem to rate Sywell although ive not been yet so cant comment. Im hoping to start trying them all out shortly as ive only recently moved into Northamptonshire myself. Asa Bear
I shot 100 sporting at Sywell yesterday for the first time and it was excellent. There were some difficult targets, some easy and some easy looking ones that were very difficult! Did a round of DTL as well, wish I hadn't! Do they let you go off and do your own thing, or do they follow you around like a lost puppy?

I was at an organised shoot. The 100 sporting was £25 with tea & bacon butty but I don't know if this was subsidised. The DTL was @£7.50. I got the impression it was a nice friendly ground. Nobody bothered us, we had the run of the place tbf.
jackinbox99
Sounds ideal! I`ll be checking it out over the next few weeks as I only live about 5 miles away from them. Cheers!
BenHammer
Thanks for all advice! As soon as I'm back on my feet Andy cast il have to try some of the grounds. I think Sywell will be my main one, is there any specific days that the sporting layout is on? (Sorry new to all of this!)

Northampton Clay Ground = Sywell. Riseley = Sporting Targets Four names but only two venues! (Unless I'm missing something!) Riseley is excellent if you just want a wander round on your own, take your pick sporting skeet DTL or 5 stand, nice & relaxed, good variety and nice people. Good shop too. Midweek it feels like you have the place to yourself. Take lots of money. Sywell clubby but very friendly and well laid out but more trap oriented than sporting and not claymate so you need to take a lad round with you (I think - it has been a while since I've been) Also not open all week like Riseley., Check the website for opening times. Kibworth not too far away and another nice ground worth a visit, clubby again, small but well laid out, not sure of opening times tho. Doveridge is a longer drive but the trip is worth it, a professional operation rather than a club, like Riseley but more hills, nice people. Quite a few sunday haybailers around as well, one of the best IMHO is Drayton Parslow Sporting Clays near Milton Keynes but there are lots more. Clays are rubbish practice for real pigeons though...there is more much more to pigeon shooting than pointing a gun and pulling the trigger! I sit out in the field yelling pull all day but they rarely come and when they do you don't get 10 all the same with time to reload!
