Go and do a trade/some other form of career path first then try your hand at the keepering, then if it goes balls up you have something to fall back on, wish I had done that, because if you end up for whatever reason out on your ear and can't afford to re train your stuck doing **** jobs, better to sort yourself out when your young, however I tried the keepering and it is the best way of life I'd give my right nut to get back in, however when your starting out you need to stand out all the time for all the right reasons keep your head above the rest as its unbelievably competitive for jobs especially for lads starting out, from my college class four years ago there's only three lads still keepering from a class of 20

Always remember as well everyone gets to hear about it if you screw up, no one ever says anything about you doing a good job, one mistake if its big enough will hang over you forever, but I wish you all the best mate and hope you manage to get on further than I did

Ps- best way to get a start on an estate is asking to help out for free, it shows your keen, and do all the leg work yourself, ie visiting keepers/ writing letters, it's no good your mam or dad doing it for you( not that I'm suggesting this is the case ) if your good enough the estate you volunteer on might give you a start or if they can't take you you have a glowing reference for somewhere else
