NickS
A warning to any other owners..... Make sure that you have the centre bearing checked when the vehicle is serviced. Unfortunately I didn't and mine suddenly started making horrible noises when it failed. VW do not sell just the bearing so it means a new prop shaft costing about £1000 fitted. Apparently they only last about 60K miles. What bugs me is that this is a known issue and has been for years. (You find this sort of thing out soon after you could have done with knowing about it). At what point does a component become unfit for purpose? Nick
welsh1
Buy the bearing yourself then get it fitted, the bearing will cost about £200 then a garage will charge labour on top £180? Do a google search for prop shaft bearing tourag, there are a few forums out there with prices and where to buy.
NickS
Thanks - repair now underway but I am going to get the old shaft refurbished so I have a spare if I need it. Nick
NickS
Some good news - the garage called VW on my behalf who decided, as a goodwill gesture, to pay 40% of the cost. It is always worth asking.... Nick
