Al69ec
I'm after some advice please guys. I'm applying fo my fac in the next week or 2. Have my land sorted and my references... I'm stuck as to what calibre of rifle to apply for. My quarry will be the usual ground game, fox, roe, and corvids. I was thinkin .17 hmr and a .243 would these be adequate for my needs? Thanks
Kes
Nice problem to have !It really depends on where you are and your forces view of - particularly deer.If the latest information from ACPO is being followed, you should avoid mentoring. Your cert is certain to be closed for the land you have. You are however in Yorkshire, in which case you may get it opened immediately from comment posted on here. My own choice of calibres would be;A .22LR for rabbits and small vermin using subsonic ammo. I would then go for a .17 hornet or .204 for longer range vermin including fox out to 200yds + - most fox shots are closer than this, ammo is quite reasonably priced and can be reloaded. Finally for deer, I would consider a .308 as you can get one at a reasonable price and deer shots will be less in number and a .308 will effectively kill anything you come across. In addition, some estates (when shooting reds) specify a calibre in excess of .243. You could go for a .270 or one of the other favoured calibres but I would stick with a .308 if it were my pick ! Very good shooting and enjoy yourself safely - take an experienced shot with you to give you a bit of guidance at first, someone you trust, you learn a lot in the first year or so. roger3167
Would it not depend on what callibers your permission has been passed to use? The decision might be taken out of your hands
Luckyshot
You are in north Yorkshire so your fac will be open from the off so its best to decide how much shooting you will be doing and at what distances. This will then help to decide what guns you will require.
