Yes we call firearms guns and not weapons. The police also use the word weapon and I think it's a poorly used word as most of us use guns sensibly and don't kill any man with it. I believe the use of this word "weapon" when it comes to firearms has a negative connotation and the media especially like to use it to demonize legitimate gun ownership. Here are soem of those words:

assault rifle (modern sporting rifle)

clip(when referring to as magazine, not a genuine clip like the one for the Mosin Nagant)

6 shooter (revolver)

sniper rifle(scoped rifle)
