Sunday shooting at Cambridge

Well I had waited all week of this. I had the gun stock extended by Allan Wright and he had done an amazing job adding a full 1.5inches to the stock length. I tried the gun out clay shooting on Saturday and it made a huge difference but for me the real test was in the field.

The farm where I was shooting had little action with all the pigeons - what few were flying - all going next door to a rape field. Now I did not have permission on this field but I could set up along the flight line and try and coax a few my way. I set-up with the wind to my rear against a hedge and the sun in front of me slightly to the right. I put out 16 FUDs with four full bodied decoys and two bouncers set low as if on the final approach to landing. The wind was chilly and about 11mph and the flight path brought the birds from behind the hedge to my rear and over my right shoulder and crossing to the field on my left. The plan was to take those I could on the way out but try and get them to turn and join my little party. There was also another flight path from way over to my front and left that brought the pigeons in from another area so when the left the rape field they should come my way...... that was the theory.

I was set-up by 10:30 and weary of the 11 o'clock silence I faffed around settling down. 10:50 and my first customer popped into the pattern with one shot joined the patten. At 11am I stopped and stood for five minutes and paid my respects.... in that glorious sunshine there was not a better place to remember.

At 11:20 I had a steady stream but each left leaving a puff of feathers but still flying..... SIX in total left this way and I could not fathom why..... FOLLOW THROUGH stupid and the next three joined the pattern with a single shot each. The extra length in the stock was working well and I was hitting them hard as long as I followed through . I still missed some but ended up with 25 for the three hours.

By 2pm the skies where clear and not a bird flew so I packed up and then spent the next hour zeroing the air rifle and testing it between 30m and 60m....

A good day and given there was little about it was not a bad days sport.
