Willow32
As you know from previous threads my dog has been doing a bit of running off...e.g Pheasant and on Sunday Hare.I have read a lot about the bolting rabbit and decided to get one to hopefully steady the dog up. What I want to know is the best way to approach this training. I am also going to set this up in different places so the dog does not get use to its location. regards Willow32
kent
Never thought them worthwhile, credit the dog with some intellect. Has anyone finished a dog to steady to rabbits with one of these contraptions? personally seriously doubt it. Real rabbits is what you need to get onto. Had a cracking test today myself, Dog well out in front in the garden and a rabbit runs behind me being chased by a stoat dropped the dog (it just seemed so tempting for him). The Stoat then scored (lots of squeeling) walked him away in the opposite direction. Ok so I have this at home but if I didn't I should go out and find it rather than mess around with bits of gadgets. I might add the dog in question is no paragon of virtuous steadiness 100% of the time and has had his moments but this is how you make a dog- real things
Willow32
I understand what your saying , the idea was to create a distraction /sudden movement and steady him up that way. The permissions I have dont have loads of rabbits ,pheasants and when he does go and I get him back , I can never find anyother distractions to find out if he has taken any notice. kent
The fact remain you cannot train a gundog without game, look for training days on estates etc. book a bit of rough shooting and get out and search for bits of common or waste ground that hold bunnies, take the dog to the park with ducks etc. be inventive

Dave1087
Bolting rabbits do work but you have to be careful in how you train with them the ones I use are the remote controlled ones I have made They are the best way of simulating a rabbit in a controlled invirament unles you can use a rabbit pen
