Man-o-woods Posted January 5, 2014 Report Share Posted January 5, 2014 Guys I'm new to air rifles and need some advice. With a shotgun I need 14.5 inch stock. Would I need the same for an air rifle? With a rifle its harder to gauge it in my opinion, because what feels great in the shop standing up might feel horrible when you're prone trying to get a decent sight picture. I remember some years ago getting everything set up perfectly sat at a table using a benchrest, then I went out shooting and had to move it all again because when I was lying in the prone position it didn't fit me any more. Its the same as anything, try some out, see what feels ok. If I was spending serious money I'd ask if I could lie down and see how it felt, no matter how much of a berk I felt in the shop. My last air rifle purchase was a fully adjustable FT rifle, so I wasn't too concerned because I knew it was adjustable. If I was spending a grand or more on a new rifle with wooden stock I'd want to see how it felt in the standing, sitting and prone position before I parted with money. srspower Posted January 5, 2014 Report Share Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) If it's a PCP rifle then fit is probably less of an issue because you are not really absorbing recoil. My air rifles stock is a little on the short side, I could get an extension but it is pretty long already so I prefer a stubby stock as it makes it easier to get around barns etc. Whats most important with a rifle is that you don't cant the rifle to the left or right and that your eye in dead centre of the reticle. Fit can help with this but you can always cheat, like I do, and use a 'accucover' that way you have the rifle mounted correctly every time.
