Eley Subsonics data

Recommended Posts

For those of you interested in this round, or those that use them, Eley Plus HP seem to be a very consitantly made round. I have just checked dozens of rounds with my vernier, and these came out the most consitant.

The readings taken as an average (which were very consistant!)

Overall bullet length including case: .984''/25mm

Bullet width: .223''/5.68mm

Case width: .223/5.68mm

I would have liked to weigh the bullets too, to be even more precise.

When I tried this on the Lapua rounds, I found they were slightly smaller in length and bullet width. They were also quite a lot more inconsistant then the Eley.

Eley looks like a very well made, consistant round, however may Sako still prefers Lapua.

Lapua bullet thickness was measured at .222 callibre and bellow.

So im geussing what affects accuracy gun to gun is: the length of the chamber before rifling begins, and the diameter of the barrel. Finding a bullet that fits your gun best means having the optimum space between bullet, and the begining of the rifling, also the right bullet width to suit it.

My sako bore reads .216''/5.51mm between the rifles in the bore.

Just goes to show how even the smallest change can have such a large effect on the accuracy of a firearm.
