Fisherman Mike
Well good job I am not a mechanic...Garage checked all the wheels today and all bearings were sound as a pound. The play on the front wheel was apparently just normal tolerance for the hub and suspension assembly ( according to the technician )The noise was coming from ceased rear brake shoes which was somehow transferred to the front of the car...so both assemblies were stripped out, eased, lubricated and the car road tested. The technician at another Renault main dealer said that the front bearings on the MK 1 clio are extremely long lived and the car would probably fall apart around me before the bearings gave up. He also said they were so robust the car could be driven until the bearing noise became unbearable...not sure I would like to try it though.
