Countryside Alliance or BASC or both??

Evening all, just back from a good day at the Great Yorkshire show and I'm after some shared thoughts / knowledge!

At the bottom end of the ground myself and the mrs were wandering past the Countryside Alliance tent on our way to the gundog display when we got talking to the chap on the stand.

He instantly went into his sales pitch and the benefits of their insurance all for a 90 quid joint membership, I told him we are both BASC members and he promptly responded by saying that BASC only really looks out for shooting sports and the two organisations didn't overlap.

Further sales pitch followed with what they are looking to lobby parliament on (fracking etc) coupled with a 25 quid voucher on joining for your local supermarket!

Have to say I felt disappointed by the scattergun mandate and lack of a cohesive manifesto on rural issues..I also thought the 25 quid supermarket voucher a tad daft if you are supposed to be helping out the rural economy.

I'm still open minded but the chap on the stand was somewhat patronising, can anyone give me a different viewpoint?? Is the Countryside Alliance actually doing a good job and did I just meet a less than able rep?

Answers on a postcard please to "bemused" Yorkshire Dales!

Ps: Apologies for the typing, iphone + theakstons!

I was with the countryside alliance but then moved over to BACS as this was needed to join the wildfowling club that im in. BACS are not just out for sport but many other issues to. Just have a look on their home page. Furthermore, BACS don't need to flog a supermarket voucher to try and sell their policies.

Speaking personally and as a long standing CA member, I too find it very strange that the CA are offering a £25 supermarket voucher on their stands to try and get people to join when they make so much noise about standing up for small local shops, cant quite get my head around that!

With my BASC hat on I am pleased people recognise that there is much more to BASC than insurance for shooting, indeed our home page helps to show what we are delivering.

Best wishes to all.

Sales effort always comes with a drive for income. I know it isn't all free and full time staff need full time pay, indeed I believe we could do far better at the top of our orgs if the pay rates were commensurate with what the members really expect and want. However I fear and know full well that a big pull when used always seems to become a big push in the eyes of a customer.

It might be sort of nice and good for all if we had a firm alliance between the orgs not to spend too much time preaching to the converted and all poaching in the same fishing pond, all said and done there are only so many fish one might take from it

I agree completely, the reason we are members of BASC is because we know what the aims are, the benefits for sport and the wider rural economy. If I was being cynical I got the impression that the CA simply cherry picked a few random issues like rural broadband to boost support instead of just simply lobbying for a repeal of the hunting ban??

I'm against the hunt ban but still felt like the CA were being almost duplicitous in how they were targeting my membership.

Anyhow compliments of the BASC stand and the shooting sim!
