Longchalk
Had a very busy couple of days, both with work & partying this weekend, so only had Sunday afternoon to go shooting. I decided to wait for it to cool down a bit, and travelled light so that it wouldn't take too long to set up. Having a good idea where there was strong flightline over three large fields of rape stubble, I was pleased to see several hundred birds on or over the fields when I drove in the gate at 4:00pm. Carrying just a chair, the gun, cartridges, and a dozen half-shell decoys it was a doddle to walk into position 350 yards from the road and set up under prominent tree. I just tucked myself back into the hedge, in some deep shade, and was shooting within 10 minutes. With the camo on, including face cover, it was obvious the birds couldn't see me, even when I got up to fire, despite having no proper hide. In truth I shot very poorly to start with. There was an extremely strong, gusty wind, and I think now that the crossers, which were really motoring, were not being given enough lead, whereas with birds that were dropping in head on, I was probably failling to allow for the final few feet of descent, and too often was just over the top of them. I eventually adjusted, and finished up with 22 for 45 shots in 2 and a bit hours. Not a great ratio, but some testing & enjoyable shooting on a beautiful sunlit evening. Improvised 'hide' & the bag below. Being bang under the flightline in a field the birds were feeding on makes it all so much easier. I wonder why I kill myself lugging all the other kit around sometimes!! Edited August 4, 2014 by Longchalk
